First grade news

Dear First grade families, This week was all about Kindness.  Thank you for sharing with us how kindness has transferred into your home.  Through reading books, art projects, and class discussions, we shared how we can be thoughtful with one another. Thank you to the Abel family for opening the doors of the Watermark factory and showing the class how to plate copper into nickel and gold.  We loved seeing the factory.  It was very cool to be sitting in a board room! In Reading this week we learned a lot of phonics rules! We learned that “have” is an...

Hello Families, We have been exploring kindness through discussion and reading stories that emphasize different ways to be kind (patience, thinking of others’ needs, inclusion, standing up against wrongdoing, remembering manners, service projects, etc.) as we celebrate kindness week.  We have been so ambitious with our activities, we have to extend it to next week! Every time someone notices someone else being kind, they write it on a link that we add to our kindness chain on each kindergarten door in the hallway. Our goal is to connect the chains by this Tuesday! In math, we have used different tools...

Dear First Grade Parents, This week was full of observation and exploration.  We really enjoyed going to the fire house and meeting the fire fighters.  They taught us what to do if there is smoke and a fire and most of all, they made us feel safe and like we could always come to them for help. This week in first grade we talked about setting in story.  For example, when we read “The Night Gardener” by Terry and Eric Fan.  We talked about if the book took place in an urban or suburban environment.  This week in phonics we...

Our Week in Fifth Grade: 1-24-20

Advisory This week, the fifth graders had the hard conversation about the increasing threat of anti-semitism in our world. We talked about events that have occurred recently in New York and created a space for the students to share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. The students had really beautiful reactions and shared some actions they could take to show that they are proud to be Jewish and to support the Jewish community. Some suggestions included not hiding their Judaism, saying something if they hear another kid make a mean comment about Jewish people, or call the police, erase (if possible),...

Judaic Studies with Ariana We have been busy learning our unit of Food Justice. The students learned about food waste as well as food security versus food insecurity. We were fortunate to welcome again Caitlin from “Repair the world” for another insightful session that lead to interesting dialogue in our class. 3rd grade participated in the Senesh week of Action preparing delicious sandwiches and packing lunches for the hungry. Our class visited CHIPS (a soup kitchen and homeless shelter) to deliver the meals we prepared for those in need. Thank you so much to all the parents who graciously accompanied...

Judaic Studies with Ariana  Fourth grade has been learning about Ancient Israel. We created a 3D time line that describes events from the Biblical Times of Abraham to the Assyrian and Babylonian invasions. We read historical sources and engaged in conversations about the different kings that reigned in Israel. We will continue to cover the stories more in depth through this year. We continue learning Chumash breaking down the pesukim determining which character is speaking each time, highlighting verbs and places too. In Tefillah, we have been working on Birkot ha Torah. Everyone is doing an amazing job! We are...

6th Grade News: 1/13 – 1/24/20

Advisory & Social Action:  In advisory this week and last, we have been focusing on the theme of kindness. We watched an inspiring video about a “chain” of kind gestures, which showed how one small thoughtful act can lead to many others. See the video at this link if you’re interested! Then, we thought about how we could re-enact this kindness chain in our own school, and 6th graders produced and acted in their own original videos on this topic. Once the videos are ready we can share them with you! Continuing with this theme, next week the entire school...

In addition, the students can now describe the color of what they are wearing. We also read the book ״המטריה גדולה של אבא״. The kids also enjoyed having the Shinshinim in class. In Judaic studies, we studied the fifth day of creation and how God created animals. The students...

Dear First Grade Families, We loved seeing you at the tekes today.  It was really special for the students to share what they have been learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Reading this week, we continued reading books by Patricia Polacco.  This week we read the book Mr. Lincoln’s Way, a book about how to treat one another and how our words can make people feel.  In our guided reading groups, we have been working on writing complete sentences and zooming in and finding evidence from the text. In Math, we began a unit on shapes.  We learned...
