Hello Families, What a lovely week! We had our Shuk on Thursday and had so much fun counting the right amount of shekels for goodies and giving change. We continue to create our neighborhood and released our ladybugs into the garden today! In Music class, First Graders completed their unit on Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals by learning the Tortoises movement and how it inspired Jacques Offenbach’s Can Can. Hello Families, In Hebrew, the first graders have been busy preparing for their shuk (the Israeli market). We learned about the Israeli money (shekels) and made some of our own to use in our shuk. The first graders decide what kind of fruits and vegetables they want to sell and buy in our shuk and for how much money we are going to sell them for. We also decorated signs with the names and prices of the fruits and vegetables that we are going to have in our shuk. Hello Families, We celebrated how much we have learned this year with the Siddur Ceremony! It was such a special event! We were so proud of all the first graders and what an amazing job they did! In the Hebrew classroom, we learned about Shavuot! On Shavuot we are celebrating the time that we received the Torah. We spoke about how the Torah has rules (The Ten Commandments) that keep us safe just like rules we have at home and school. Hello Families, We have been very busy practicing and preparing for our Siddur ceremony the last few weeks! In math, we have learned the value of coins and practiced counting money. When counting a group of coins, we learned to sort, start with the biggest ones, trust them in different patterns, and make groups (of 5s, 10s, 100s, etc.). We learned the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters and practiced exchanging money using various combinations of coins. Hello Families, In the Hebrew classroom, we continue traveling through the state of Israel! We traveled all the way to the mountains of Jerusalem. We spoke and wrote sentences about what is so special about this city. As part of their stop in Jerusalem, each student made their own kotel (Western Wall) out of construction paper. They wrote notes, about their hopes and wishes, to put in their kotel. We look forward to sharing all their work with you at our Siddur Ceremony. We also spoke about Lag Ba’Omer. Hello Families, This week in the Hebrew classroom, we continued to travel through the state of Israel. We visited the busy streets of Tel Aviv and then went down to Yam hamelach (the dead sea). The first graders were so excited to start to prepare for our Siddur Ceremony which we will celebrate on Tuesday May 23th at 9am. We also had lots of fun celebrating Yom Hahatzmaut together. Hello Families, In the Hebrew classroom this week, we started traveling through the state of Israel! We started at Kineret , then made our way, and visited the port city of Haifa. Students wrote sentences in Hebrew of what we can find in Haifa and drew pictures of the city inspired by images they saw in photographs, videos, and books. We look forward to continuing our travels to new places in Israel next week. Hello Families, Our past seven days have been a whirlwind of preparation, celebrations, and our Seder. We had a very busy week learning about Pesach in the Hebrew classroom! We learned all about the ten plagues and learned a song to review the 10 Plagues in Hebrew and English. The first graders had so much fun making their own ten plague bags that they will take home to bring to their Seder. Hello Families, In the Hebrew classroom, we started to learn about Pesach (Passover)! We reviewed the story of Pesach. We spoke about the different symbols of the holiday, including the hagadah, the seder plate (kearat seder), and matzah. We learned that Pesach has 4 names: Chag Hapesach, Chag Haaviv (the spring holiday), Chag Hacherut (the holiday of freedom) and Chag Hamatzot. We also reviewed the four questions (ma nishtana), and many first graders are excited to recite them at their Seders. We are going to continue to learn more about Pesach throughout next week. Hello Families, It has been a very exciting week! We read Purim stories, played games and sang lots of Purim songs and we had so much fun celebrating Purim together! In Hebrew, we continued to learn how to describe ourselves using different action words and colors and then we practiced it in our reading, writing and speaking.
