First Grade News

What an exciting first week of school!  This week the first graders loved meeting everyone and building community within the classroom.  We welcomed many new students to the group.  In order to get to know one another we played games like “pop up and pop down” to learn what we have in common and different, and shared some of our favorite things, like ice cream and animals. We even designed and created our own ice cream cones!  This week the students learned classroom routines and procedures and settled in to being back at school. In writing, students enjoyed making a...

Blogs for May 2nd and May 3rd

Leila and Hannah K. are Thursday’s bloggers: We kicked off day three with a meaningful tefila by the Kinneret. Many of us were able to keep Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in mind as we recited our daily prayers. We then continued by hopping on the bus, and making our way to Newe Michael, a boarding school in Pardes Hannah. At 10:00 am, the siren went off, and the bus pulled over on the sidewalk on the side of the road in an Arab village, where we remembered the Jews who died in the Holocaust. It was touching to know...

First Grade News

First grade writers work hard to publish their series books. Each first grader wrote at least two books in a series about the same characters. We will celebrate their writing with a mini publishing party next week. As part of our science unit on organisms, each first grader planted their own seeds. We’ll observe these plants each week as they grow into our very own herb garden. After one week, we noticed that some seeds had sprouted! In phonics we’ve been studying all the different vowel teams and the various sounds they make. We’ve learned to be careful when reading...

We went on our neighborhood scavenger hunt. First graders explored our school’s neighborhood by looking for community helpers, neighborhood needs, and neighborhood wants. See below for pictures from the scavenger hunt.   In math, we continued to learn about subtraction. We practiced counting up from the smaller number. We also applied our knowledge about addition and subtraction to real world word problems. We also learned two new math games: “ninja math” and “roll and record”.   We finished our small moment (personal narrative) stories. First graders celebrated their accomplishments with a mini publishing party! In small groups, we read our...

First Full Week!

Working Hard in Second Grade We started the first  full week of second grade with a puppet show with Karen. The second graders were so excited to see the puppets and to learn that they too have “started second grade this year”. Through a story from the puppets, the students explored the idea of what to do when something is challenging. Why should we not just give up, and how can we push ourselves to keep going. Students had the chance to share about something that they find challenging, and to think about how they learned to do it anyway. This...

Last Class with Shinshinim

Israel We made shoko b’sakit for our last class with the Shinshinim and shared memories of all the fun times we had “travelling” through Israel. We also practiced the dance for the upcoming Israel Parade. We have learned so much with Yuval and Yaheli and are so grateful to them. Math This week we used many objects around the room to learn our 3 and 4 times tables. We counted our lockers in groups of 4 and practiced using our fingers. Then, we learned the relationship between multiplication and division, and using our learned facts were able to realized that...
