Greetings Kindergarten Families!

We are excited to see you this week for conferences! For election day, we discussed the voting process! We have been practicing voting on topics (favorite subject in school etc) and graphing our results. We learned the tough lessons that you can only vote once and can only vote for what is on the ballot! We started making other graphs as well to show how we come to school and how many boys and girls we have in class. In science, we are exploring day and night. We have conducted experiments to show when the sun shines on different parts...

Kindergarten Hebrew Studies

Dear Kindergarten parents הורים יקרים, It was wonderful to see so many of you at the parent-teacher conference Thursday. We look forward to seeing the rest of you Monday. During the past two weeks in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies room we focused on classroom vocabulary and the Story of Creation. We are learning and reviewing our classroom vocabulary using the melody of Eser Ezbaot Lee Yesh (I have ten fingers), partner and group work. The children enjoyed drawing on dry erase boards and “drawing” on a friends back and asking Ma Ze? With our Shinshinim Eran and Ofir we...

November 9: Weeks 9 and 10!

Math  The 7th grade has moved steadily through the world of Real Numbers. Next stop on the math train is an Introduction to Algebra where the students will learn to take everyday situations and produce algebraic expressions and equations from the data.  Believe it or not, people use algebraic expressions and equations in their daily life without realizing they are doing so. When you are buying things at the store and figuring out how much you can spend based on how much money you have, how much change you will receive when you spend money, how much time you need to...

5th Grade Week of 11/5

Humanities: This week in Humanities, we continued our study of Wonder, exploring the themes of personal identity and text-to-self connections. We tied in our Opinion Writing unit with reading Wonder as well. In Social Studies, we began to wrap up our Early Civilizations and Early Humans unit by study the Ancient Sumerians.-Tony Math: Following multiplication of whole numbers, we moved onto its opposite operation: division. Similar to division, students learned that there are a number of strategies we can use to save time and steps. For example, instead of moving the number of zeroes of each factor to the product when we...

November 9 — Publishing Share

Dear Third Grade Families, We have done so much work these past two weeks! In Social Studies, we started learning about the Lenni Lenape, which is the Native American tribe that lived in New York City back in 1600. We started by looking at a map of Manhattan from the 2000s, and comparing it to a map of what Eric Sanderson (a landscape ecologist) — through research — believed Mannahatta (land of many hills)  looked like in 1600.  Students noticed that the Hudson River looked wider back then. Some wondered if the water level had dropped and maybe that’s why...

Hello 4th Grade Families!

General Studies with Mike: We’re finished our math unit on estimation and number theory early this week. Towards the end of the week, we moved into whole number multiplication and division. Students should continue to practice their multiplication times tables through the number 12 at home. You can find multiplication games at timestables.com/games. Students are really enjoying our read aloud, The Tiger Rising By Kate DiCamillo. Over the past two weeks, we formed opinions about our own independent reading books on various topics – defining characters with character traits, determining whether our main characters make responsible decisions, etc. We then...

Voting and Spotlight on Science

Science The students have been very active scientists the past weeks.  They continue to build science vocabulary and understanding of concepts related to the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.  Each pair of science partners conducted an experiment with hot and cold water in a closed environment with cups to learn about condensation.  We read the article “A Snowman in July” which exemplified how water can change from solid to liquid to gas to water again, and students identified science words in the text relating to these changes. The next science experiment on mixing and separating solids was...

First Grade News

We went on our neighborhood scavenger hunt. First graders explored our school’s neighborhood by looking for community helpers, neighborhood needs, and neighborhood wants. See below for pictures from the scavenger hunt.   In math, we continued to learn about subtraction. We practiced counting up from the smaller number. We also applied our knowledge about addition and subtraction to real world word problems. We also learned two new math games: “ninja math” and “roll and record”.   We finished our small moment (personal narrative) stories. First graders celebrated their accomplishments with a mini publishing party! In small groups, we read our...
