10/7/22

10/7/22   Hello Second Grade families! We hope you had a meaningful and restful Yom Kippur. We’ve had a shortened week but we’ve still gotten busy with our learning of new content across the subjects.   Reading: In reading we have been building our reading stamina each day! Our readers are reading more and stretching their reading muscles. We have been slowly building up our minutes and are up to at least 20 minutes a day!   Writing: Second grade writers have been adding seed ideas to their ever growing lists. They have been learning how to stretch one small...

October in the 8th Grade

Humanities This month in ELA, students are hard at work on their personal essays. They have studied model texts from expert professional writers as well as student writers, and they are now putting their learning to practice in their own stories. A reminder that students can use these essays in their applications to private schools. They follow the ISAAGNY prompts exactly! In Social Studies, students are learning about the geography, agriculture, and economy of the antebellum United States. As part of this, we learned about the history of cotton and indigo in the New World, a commodity that was fostered...

K Blog 10/7

Dear Kindergarten Families, We hope all who observe had a meaningful Yom Kippur. Kindergarten welcomed in October as well as the Hebrew year 5783! Many students shared in Morning Meeting how they had observed the holiday.  This week in Kindergarten, students learned the letter E, completing our Frog-Jump letters (F, E, D, P, B, R, N, M), as well as learning what sound it makes. We also practiced making  8’s, the trickiest Kindergarten number! And then it was on to 9! We continued our shared reading of Mrs. Wishy Washy and shared with a partner what the information book we...

October 7: The First Month of School

Humanities In reading we have begun our first class novel, Wonder. During the beginning of the book we are focusing on tracking character development and using the text as evidence for our ideas. The students have written and revised paragraphs sharing their first impressions of the characters in the novel. We use ‘thought prompts’ such as “For example…,” “This happens when…,” “The author says…,” and “This makes me think…” to incorporate examples from the book into our writing. In social studies, we just finished our unit on mapping skills with a quiz and are well on our way into learning about early...

6th Grade First Weeks! 10/7/22

Humanities: These past few weeks in ELA, we’ve read lots of fun and surprising stories about several of the Olympian Greek gods, including Zeus, Hera, Athena, and more. While reading, we are beginning to look more deeply into the text and practice drawing conclusions about characters based on textual evidence. In addition, we took a step back to consider how a culture’s particular mythology informs its values and belief systems, and how these stories answer “BIG questions” like: Where did we come from? Why are we here? What is our purpose on earth? For example, we learned about how origin...

HUMANITIES In Humanities, 7th graders are finishing their work around The Outsiders and a mini-geography unit in Social Studies. They are in the process of writing the final drafts of letters of advice to specific characters from the book, in which they are either giving or seeking advice, while using text-based evidence. If only the teenagers from the book could have received these letters earlier! Next, we will read select Sherlock Holmes stories in English Language Arts and begin focusing on Early America, before and after 1492, in Social Studies. Ask your children about their letters of advice; they might...

Kindergarten Blog 9/23

Dear Kindergarten Families,   Today is chilly! Kindergarten is excited about the change in season and have begun talking about Fall in Hebrew. As the weather gets colder, be sure to send your child with a good jacket and warm shoes, as Kindergarten goes outside for recess in all temperatures.   This week in Science, we learned about the scientific method, and the five steps in the process: ask a Question, form a Hypothesis, conduct an Experiment, record Observations, and reach a Conclusion. This week we asked the question “Which objects sink and which objects float?” and using the scientific...

3rd Grade: 9/23 – Chag Sameach!

It’s been a very exciting two and a half weeks! We started our year getting to know each other, playing games and asking questions. We’ve also spent a lot of time getting to know our new routines. In 3rd grade, students move around to different classrooms. It was a little overwhelming in the beginning, but so far, we’ve been doing a great job! In reading, we have been preparing ourselves to be successful readers. First we thought about the right space for reading. Some said they liked to read outside, some in bed or on the couch, some like to...
