2022-2023 School Year

3rd Grade – 6/9

What a year this has been! Our study of New York, from the original inhabitants, the Lenape, Hudson’s voyages, the Dutch, to the construction of the Erie Canal and Brooklyn Bridge, culminated in an amazing and exciting production! The kids did a fantastic job and I am so proud of them! Next stop, Broadway! We read Stone Fox and were devastated at the ending (no spoilers!), Because of Winn Dixie and sympathized with Opal’s journey, and Save Me a Seat and learned about perspective and assumptions. In between, we read books independently and participated in book clubs. We were prolific...

June 9, 2023 — Saying Goodbye to Our Lower School

Math with Luis In math, the end of the year has meant me squeezing as much as I possibly can into two and a half weeks. Last week, we wrapped up our unit on the area and perimeter of rectangles and compound shapes. I was happy to spend extra time on it because 4th graders got lots of practice with straightforward problems that required multiple steps, critical thinking, and multiple operations. When we were done, we spent a fun couple of classes learning and practicing how to use protractors to draw and measure angles. We also had a brief introduction...

Final Kindergarten Blog 6/9

Dear Kindergarten Families, It’s hard to believe that we’ve arrived at the end of the year! Your children have worked hard this year learning how to be in school and grew in every way. They really are almost-first graders. This week was filled with end-of-year celebrations. On Monday, we released our class butterflies in Carroll Park and had some playground time, had our last Publishing Party with our Buddies and presented our completed map of Smith Street, and had our Summer Birthdays party. We saw the 8th Grade play, The Addams Family. We also had conversations about the end of...

Hello Families, What a lovely week! We had our Shuk on Thursday and had so much fun counting the right amount of shekels for goodies and giving change. We continue to create our neighborhood and released our ladybugs into the garden today! In Music class, First Graders completed their unit on Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals by learning the Tortoises movement and how it inspired Jacques Offenbach’s Can Can. If they’d like to hear more, there are lots of videos you can check out online. Have a beautiful, musical summer! Enjoy the pics! Shabbat Shalom, Liz and Ilana  ...

May 30, 2023- a belated Chag Shavuot Sameach!!

Hebrew with Rimma In our Hebrew class 4th graders are finishing our Unit “Objects and the stories behind them” with the digital journey by using Padlet, an interactive platform where students could share their stories and react to one another’ s experience. Students were given the opportunity to select an object that holds a special place in their heart or which is important to their family. Some students are still in the process of writing. When they will finish writing, each of them will present it to the class.I encourage you to take the time and explore the stories that...

SCIENCE In 7th grade science, students have taken their knowledge on environment and ecology to present a mock city board meeting. In this scenario, a wastewater treatment plant is due to open in Brooklyn and must pass legislation. Each group represents different interests such as aquatic ecologists, politicians, residents and activists. Students are responsible for researching, planning and presenting a strong argument. This presentation will connect politics, debate skills and environmental science. Shina   HUMANITIES As we finish our year in Humanities, 7th graders have just finished our study of The Diary of Anne Frank in which they grappled with...

June 9 – What a Year!

Congratulations to our second graders on finishing the school year! It was a bittersweet last few weeks of school and we soaked up our joyful time together before summer break. The students reflected on their growth academically, socially and emotionally since the school year started. It’s hard to believe that that was ten months ago! As cliche as it sounds, time does fly when you are having fun. The kids spent thoughtful time looking back at work and sharing how they have changed as readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, artists – the list goes on and on! They revisited their hopes...

6th Grade End-Of-Year Wrap Up 6/9/23

Humanities:  It’s been a full, fun, and productive year in humanities! As we close out our final units, I feel so proud of how the students have stepped up as learners and leaders. We wrapped up our Social Studies curriculum with a final test on Rome and a discussion about Rome’s fall and legacy (and then, of course, a class celebration!). When students study American history in seventh grade, they will be prepared to find countless connections between our own country’s past and the classical civilizations we examined this year. From America’s founding principles to its government, art, and architecture,...

June 9: End of the Year Wrap-Up

Humanities  What a year! We’ve read novels, written essays, traveled through ancient civilizations, and kept up with current events. We ended the year by finishing A Long Walk to Water and learning more about Salva’s effort to bring clean water to his former home. We also watched interviews with Lost Boys who have been resettled to the United States where they shared their experiences moving from Sudan to the US. Our final social studies project was a talk show where the guests each represented one of the three Chinese philosophies, Confucianism, Daoism, or Legalism. The students learned about the philosophies,...

Hello Families, In Hebrew, the first graders have been busy preparing for their shuk (the Israeli market). We learned about the Israeli money (shekels) and made some of our own to use in our shuk. The first graders decide what kind of fruits and vegetables they want to sell and buy in our shuk and for how much money we are going to sell them for. We also decorated signs with the names and prices of the fruits and vegetables that we are going to have in our shuk. They even made fancy arnakim (wallets).  In Social Studies, we have discussed the needs and...
