Our Week in Fifth Grade! 11-15-19
Advisory Can you give the perfect directions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? That is what the fifth graders tried to accomplish this week. Working in teams, the students created and wrote explicit directions step-by-step to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The teachers then read the directions and followed them… literally. General Studies with Dawn It was great to have the chance to meet with so many of you to share with each other how fourth grade is going so far. I look forward to more conversations in the future. We are busy this week with two major projects, publishing the Realistic Fiction Stories and creating posters and games about the explorers. Advisory On Friday, November 1st, students had their second trip to Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School. They read the book The Good Egg and lead students through a few comprehension activities. Israel 7 with Phyllis and Ilana NB Israel class is getting exciting as the students received their character profiles last week! Each student was assigned a profile that included gender, country of origin, birth date and a date of aliyah. 6th Grade Advisory: In advisory this week and last, we’ve engaged with several important topics: Stress at school, how to communicate with a team, and how to respond to tricky social situations. To address some high levels of homework anxiety, Mike Noll and I (6th grade advisors) invited students to share time-management strategies with their classmates. We also discussed the importance of prioritizing, asking students: How do you know which assignment to work on first? Second? Last? Etc. On our way through November in the 8th grade!
Humanities In ELA class, students have been working so hard on writing and revising their first literary analysis essays of the year. They have been so impressive to read, and I am truly impressed with how deeply students are willing to dive into interpretation. Additionally, have begun reading Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Please make sure that your child is reading at home every night! Judaic Studies with Ariana We are so proud of the 3rd grade students for their moving performances during the Hannah Senesh Tekes. All the childrens’ Venn Diagrams written for the occasion are currently on display outside our classroom. It’s simply moving to see how much in common the students have with our inspiring namesake. First Grade News
The first graders this week have been busy writing, learning and playing. We have loved seeing parents at school, whether it is during parent teacher conferences or the Hannah Senesh tekes (ceremony). Our class opened the ceremony by singing “Eli Eli” in Hebrew and English, and showed paintings they made which were inspired by the song. They were rightfully, very proud of themselves! Hello Families, We have had a busy week of celebrating everyone’s names! Kids are now experts on their own beginning letter and helping their friends during writing workshop if they need to write it or know the sound. Kids are also acting as a teacher and showing the class the writing pathway of their letter using the handwriting without tears ABC shapes. They love this! Hodesh tov from the 8th grade team! Hebrew Dear parents, This week the students finished their individual end of unit projects. The students practiced using the learned vocabulary in skits and oral presentations. In addition, we watched a movie about Hannah Senesh in Hebrew and we discussed the choices that Hannah Senesh made throughout her life. We also read some of her poems in Hebrew.
