Hello Families, In our short week, we have accomplished so much! Both the yellow and blue group have focused on learning their own names by heart. They are now using an uppercase letter followed by lowercase letters and even have taught their friends. Kids are now acting as experts on their beginning letter in the room. During writing, friends coming to them to ask for advice! We have started exploring 1 and 2 in both handwriting and representing the numbers in different ways. 6th Grade News: TEVA Edition
Dear parents, We hope you enjoyed our e-mail updates these last few days about our wonderful time at TEVA! Students had a blast hiking, exploring the natural environment, singing original TEVA songs, making food and ritual objects, doing tefila (prayer) outside in the sun, and more. Throughout the week, they strengthened bonds with good friends and formed new connections with other classmates. First Grade News
This week in first grade we have been sharing and exploring, whether through learning how to play math games with partners, sharing personalized writing folders, or showing friends a structure we have built. In Reading we began looking at word families and patterns in spelling. We also were introduced to finding a “just right book”. Students book shopped in the classroom, making sure to find a book that was not too challenging, not too easy, but “just right”. In read aloud books this week we explored the theme of apples. Hello Families, Kindergarteners have been exploring how each of us is unique and discovering our special qualities. After reading “We are different, we are the same” we explored our faces and the shapes of each feature. We also compared similarities and differences between faces. Using mirrors, we sketched out our faces using shapes, traced in sharpie, colored in crayon, and finished with a watercolor resist. We studied the 3 colors in our skin and how to mix colors! Shanah tovah umetukah from the 8th grade class! We have had a wonderful two weeks together since you last heard from us. English and Social Studies Students have been beginning the school year building on their knowledge of literary elements, the building blocks for strong literary analysis. We have been making our way through stories of Gothic Literature and have been excavating them for plot, setting, and symbolism. In Social Studies, students have been exploring the worlds of pre-Columbian indigenous cultures while simultaneously working on note-taking and self-organizing skills. Advisory In advisory this week, students met their buddies and read a story as a group, The Empty Pot. Great fun was had! On Friday, October 4th, students will be reading the same book to the kindergarten and first grade classes of Brooklyn Landmark Elementary School as part of their Guest Reader Friday program. Judaic studies with Ariana In the past weeks we have been learning all about the Rosh HaShana Simanim. We learned the traditional foods that Sephardim and Ashkenazim eat in Rosh HaShana. We also learned what foods are common to both groups. We have been learning about the Shofar sounds(Tekia, Shvarim, Truah, Tekia Gedola) as well as the blessing we recite prior to listening to the Shofar. General Studies Things have been bustling in the General Studies Room over the last two weeks. Students are getting to know each other, the routines of the classroom, and the expectations of life in the Fourth Grade In Writer’s Workshop we are learning about Realistic Fiction, stories that are grounded in reality but that did not actually happen. This week in first grade we welcomed the parents into our classroom at Back To School Night. We enjoyed meeting everyone and speaking about the exciting year ahead! The students loved writing letters to parents and receiving letters in return.
