Kindergarten Newsletter

Hello Families, Our days have pleasantly flown by over the past week as we discussed our hopes and dreams for the year.  We started by reading “Of Thee I sing” where we explored traits of amazing people and what we want to be like/do when we grow up.  We have a class of future astronauts, comedians, teachers, mothers, bus drivers, ballerinas, fire fighters, vets, nurses, and kids who want to make the world a better place!   We then read “Someday…” and discussed what our hopes and dreams are for this year.  We have quite a range from wanting to make...

Third Week of Second Grade

Writing In Writing Workshop we delved into beginning our narrative unit on small moment stories. In order to learn how to choose meaningful small moments, we studied authors who have written meaningful small moment stories. We read the first page of the story Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, and noticed how she begins to describe this one night of owling with so many details! We got to writing our small moment narratives, using ideas from our decorated writing folders, and studying Jane Yolen’s writing to help us stretch our stories. With our writing buddies we talked about our ideas, brainstormed ways...

What an exploratory week we have had in first grade! We also wanted to say Happy Birthday Ruby! We really enjoyed having Ruby’s family in the classroom and celebrating together. First, we started off the week learning more about materials in our classroom. We practiced using the glue and scissors through guided discovery. We even created our own owls and penguins. In Math, students received their new math workbooks and were excited to start using them!  We began our number sense unit by talking about numbers and relating them to objects.  For example, four apples is the same as four...

Hello Families, Our community is becoming increasingly comfortable and taking more risks during our morning meeting activities.  This week, we have learned to shake hands (no limp fishes!) while making eye contact, share though turn and talks and games like “just like me”, and learn names singing “can you guess the name?” and “Busy busy bumble bee”. This group is great at remembering details about other children! We have been exploring how we take care of ourselves and the community this week.  After reading The Quiet Place, we discussed our own quiet place (the place we think about that calms...

September 6th – First week of school

Hebrew What an incredible first week of Hebrew in 3rd grade! This week, as it was our first week back, we focused on the topic of introduction and reviewed the thematic unit “Me and my school environment”. The goal of this week was to become more comfortable in speaking, to have fun in Hebrew and to review past learned vocabulary. We played games and drew pictures as they follow instructions. These were activities were focused on communicating when following or giving directions. It allowed students to follow instructions, pay attention to details and improve verbal skills when they needed to...

What an exciting first week of school!  This week the first graders loved meeting everyone and building community within the classroom.  We welcomed many new students to the group.  In order to get to know one another we played games like “pop up and pop down” to learn what we have in common and different, and shared some of our favorite things, like ice cream and animals. We even designed and created our own ice cream cones!  This week the students learned classroom routines and procedures and settled in to being back at school. In writing, students enjoyed making a...

First Week in Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade General Studies It has been a wonderful first three days of school.  We have spent time getting to know each other, including the ways that we are similar and different. For example, while many of us have siblings, like sports, and live in Brooklyn, only a few of us went to sleep away camp or can wiggle our ears. And only one of us lives in Manhattan, has a pet bird named Yasha, or has three children! We have also spent time setting up the classroom, including sewing pillow covers, making labels, and filling out the September calendar. ...

First Week

Hello Families, We have had a whirlwind of activity this week as we settle into Kindergarten. We are getting to know one another and becoming more comfortable sharing about ourselves during morning meetings. We have sung songs, read poems and morning messages, and played games to become familiar with our classroom and friends. Students are now confidently choosing and caring for books, independently cleaning up and moving to the next activity, and reminding visiting adults not to play in the hallway and bathroom! As we slowly and steadily build our community, we discussed, explored, and shared about new tools in...

6th Grade First Week of School 9/6/19

ADVISORY It’s been a busy first week in sixth grade! Because we have ten new students in the grade, we have really focused on our sixth grade community these first few days. First, we created re-wearable name tags with our names and special symbols, and we’ve been encouraging the students to wear their name tags each day. We also created a peer buddy system, so that each new student is paired with a returning student. Returning students have been showing their buddies around the school, sitting with them at lunch, and generally helping them feel welcome. You can see the...

Judaic Studies It’s been a pleasure getting to know the 7th graders this week! We began by exploring one of our major school values: מסע/Journey. This is a key value for us this year, because will be studying the book of במדבר/Numbers, which details the journeys of Bnai Yisrael on their way to Israel. This brought up a kushiya/question for us: If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t God just magically put all of Bnai Yisrael in Israel? Why do they need to travel through the wilderness? This led to a powerful conversation about why struggle and challenge might be important...
