We are so excited that Liz is returning on Monday! This week’s writing was letters welcoming her back and telling her about what we have been learning since she was gone. In math we continued our study of shapes, looking at the squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles that you can make when you trace the faces of cubes, rectangles, pyramids, and cylinders. 5th Grade Week of 3/4
Another great week in 5th grade! We continue to push through the cold winter and have had a ton of fun! Celebrating Rosh Chodesh with Pajama Day! We had a fun filled Pajama Day today! Kids loved seeing their friends and teachers in pajamas, as well as having their stuffed animals in school. We joined the rest of the school in singing “Mi shenichnas Adar Marbin B’simcha” (When Adar comes, we are happy!) during the school wide pajama parade. During Hebrew we listened to and read the words to the popular song about a Zebra and pajamas. March 8 — 15 miles on the Erie Canal
Music with Eyal Students have been learning a new song on the xylophone! 3rd Grade Music Hebrew with Ilana This week the third grade learned the song “Tamid Nishar Ani” – “Always Being Myself”. In the song there are adjective words and opposite words. The students practiced writing sentences, find the opposite word, and worked on comprehension of the song. Also they had conversation about themselves using the opposite feelings and then answering questions in writing. On Monday they will have quiz on the vocabulary. First Grade News
We’ve started a new genre of writing: realistic fiction. We’re studying the story “Henry and Mudge” by Cynthia Rylant as an example of the genre. Each first grader is using their amazing pretending powers to think of a character and imagine adventures for that character. We also learned to add dialogue, feelings and action to our stories. In phonics we’ve been learning about contractions. Using our detective skills, first grader noticed that when two words are squished together to make a contraction, the apostrophe usually takes the place of vowel. Humanities In English/Language Arts, students read a variety of short stories and analyzed them for literary elements like plot and characterization. Students spent time freewriting in preparation for brainstorming and writing their own short stories next week! In social studies, students critically analyzed the History Channel documentary “The Dark Ages,” and then were tasked with created their own “trailer” for a section of chapter 17 (The Early Middle Ages). General Studies with Mike: Welcome back to class! In math class, we began our new unit on decimals. As there is a large emphasis on decimals within the second half of the curriculum, we will remain on this concept for the next few months. HUMANITIES Last week, 6th graders had the opportunity to bring their learning to life when we visited the Brooklyn Museum. We explored art and artifacts related to ancient Egypt, including a real mummy, classic amulets, the “Book of the Dead” (or a “cheat sheet”/guide to the afterlife), sculptures of pharaohs, and more. Happy 100th Day of School! We celebrated by rotating through five activities including 100 Lego, 100 Cheerios necklaces,100 Things We Love About School, and some time in the gym. A good time was had by all! In Social Studies we read a book about having brothers and sisters. Children shared what is both fun and challenging about being a sibling.
