First Grade News

Hello Families, In the Hebrew classroom, we continue traveling through the state of Israel! We traveled all the way to the mountains of Jerusalem. We spoke and wrote sentences about what is so special about this city. As part of their stop in Jerusalem, each student made their own kotel (Western Wall) out of construction paper. They wrote notes, about their hopes and wishes, to put in their kotel. We look forward to sharing all their work with you at our Siddur Ceremony. We also spoke about Lag Ba’Omer. We learned that many years ago the Jewish people used bonfires to communicate with each other. We...

Kindergarten Blog 5/5

Dear Kindergarten Families, We had a fun week in Kindergarten! The children had a great time making kiddush cups at the pottery studio. Kindergartners sculpted their own kiddush cups using slabs of clay. They learned to attach clay embellishments to their cups using the “scratch and attach” technique, and then painted their cups with different colors of glaze. We can’t wait to see how our cups turned out! Over the next few weeks, our cups will be fired in the kiln at the pottery studio, and then Kindergartners will get to show you their finished product at our special Kabbalat...

Saying Goodbye to Israel

We woke up at the crack of dawn fully packed and ready to leave our last hotel. After tefillah and breakfast we headed to kayak. This was one of our final exciting group activities. We split up into sections and got into the water. For about a half an hour we were laughing, working, competing, and getting splashed by freezing cold water. Most importantly, we did this together as one. Everyone raced to the finish line in the Jordan River. We rested and ate fresh pizza lunch out in the sun. Then we headed on a two and a half...

AAAAH!

Today we woke up bright and early in the morning at 6:20. We then went to Tefila on the kibbutz that we’re staying at, and after that went to eat breakfast alongside a Christian Dutch tourist group. Following that, some of us befriended cats while others got ready to ride some bikes. After napping on the bus, we arrived at Hula Valley for some bike riding and bird watching! The staff at Hula Valley promptly informed us that due to rain there would be no bike riding. We overcame our initial disappointment once we learned that we would instead be...

Pre-Shabbat in the North

Today we woke up and took a drive to Rosh Hanikra. We saw the grottoes of the most northwestern spot of Israel. We also took a look at the border with Lebanon. After, we got to have time for pizur for an hour on the boardwalk in Tiberius. Most people bought falafel and ice cream. Then we drove to Aquakef, an obstacle course on the Kinneret. We had so much fun in aquakef and everyone was very sad to leave. We drove up into the Golan Heights where we saw the border with Syria and an amazing view and took...

STEAM with Sammi Working through all the steps of the scientific method in depth is a long and hard process! The fourth graders are still at work on the paper towel experiment and they will be wrapping up their lab reports next week. Over the last two weeks, we focused on writing procedures and on analyzing our data. To find out about our lessons on writing procedures, ask your student to tell you how to draw a snowman! We had a lot of fun poking holes into people’s writing as we found ways to be precise with our words. When...

Kindergarten Blog 4/27

Dear Kindergarten Families, The highlight of this week was without a doubt Yom HaAtsma’ut on Wednesday! In Writer’s Workshop, we spoke about the tools we have around the room to help Kindergartners do their best writing, and how to best use them. We talked about the various alphabet charts, the name chart, the word wall, and the snap word chart. We also introduced the vowel chart, and talked about how every word has vowels in it. In Reading we continue to practice reading and writing CVC words using several different vowels. Children continue to make good progress reading the books...

3rd blog – 4/28

We had an eventful two weeks back at school! We began exploring poetry, as April is National Poetry Month. In this writing unit we examine a specific style of poetry and then create our own poems based on that style. We’ve written one in the style of William Carlos Williams, a poem showing personification, an acrostic, a poem using our five senses, a concrete, a poem about ourselves using similes, and a poem about immigration. At the end of the unit, students will choose 3 poems to publish! We also began our final read aloud, Save Me a Seat. This...
