5th Grade Week of 5/29

What a week! We are winding down the year in style, and finishing up our final units and projects. Please enjoy our classroom updates below, and have a good weekend! Humanities: Another successful week in Humanities! We are wrapping up our book club units, and exploring some final themes and elements of fantasy stories. We are also preparing for the China Museum. May 29 – June 1

Science This week in science we are finishing the building of our custom solar cars. Students have been comparing their design with other groups. They have naturally tested the function of their cars in direct sunlight and went back to improve on their design so the car can move in a straight line. Next week we will be testing these cars for maximum velocity and how straight they can travel using the power of the sun. Exciting times with our final weeks in science. June 1 – Our Journey Through Ellis Island

Dear Third Grade Families, “This is the best trip we’ve ever had!”  “Look how big the Statue of Liberty is!”  “28 people waved to me on the boat!”  “Can I have another peppermint?”  “Not the button hook!”  “I’VE BEEN DETAINED?!” These are just SOME of the phrases we heard out of our third graders during the trips to Ellis Island, over these past two weeks.   The students began their journey at Battery Park, where they embarked on a ferry. Hello Fourth Grade Families! We’ve arrived at the last calendar month of the school year, and the last two weeks of classes. First Grade News

June 8th is Spirit Day! Students are invited to wear orange and white to school.   This week in First Grade we went on a field trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. We learned all about flowering plants and planted our own geraniums to take home!   In Social Studies, we made reusable bags out of old tshirts. First graders will use these bags at our Shuk next week.   In math we started exploring multiplication and division! They added groups of the same number to multiply, and practiced putting larger numbers into equal groups to divide.     We’re...

Planning our last weeks of Kindergarten!

Dear Kindergarten Families, We had a fun week in Kindergarten! We could not go to the new park on Thursday because of the rain, but we promised our children that we will go there next week.  We are also very excited for our field trip to the Prospect Park Zoo on Tuesday! For the next two weeks, our kindergartners will plan their own schedule (led by their teachers, of course). 6th Grade News: 5/22-5/25/18

HUMANITIES This week in History students focused on ancient Greek wars and battles, learning about the Persian Wars and Peloponnesian War. We examined the “phalanx,” an ancient Greek battle formation, and made inferences about its effectiveness. We also talked about the “big ideas” and themes that came out of these wars, such as the notion that small groups can come together to accomplish large, seemingly impossible goals. First Grade News

In writing, we started a new unit on book reviews. First graders recalled all the ways they know how to convince your reader and used this knowledge to share their opinions on books they have read. They watched videos of other students giving oral book reviews and practiced this skill as well.   In Social Studies, first graders explored the idea of recycling by making paper. First graders learned how paper is made out of trees and used the same process to make new paper out of paper scraps and water. They were so excited to bring their new papers...
