Heritage

Humanities

Literature and Writing: This week, students finished their work on Night.  They engaged in a Socratic Seminar, discussing how trauma and tragedy shape the choices and identities of individuals using examples in the text to illuminate their ideas.  Then, students created memorials in the form of a pieces of art, to memorialize their most important takeaway from reading Night.  Next week, students will present their artworks and reflect on their artistic process.  The rest of the week, students will be able to use Humanities class periods to finish their independent research projects.

History: Students continues to meet in their books clubs to finish their novels on slavery.  Next week, students will engage in Socratic discussions on their books, musing on how stories of freedom and oppression shape our past and influence our present, contribute to our collective and personal identities, help readers build empathy, and inspire a passion for justice.  On Monday, June 11th, there will be independent research project fair, where 8th grade students will present their findings on an event, person, or period of American history that interests them.  Stay tuned for an email with more details.  We would love to have you join us!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies

8th graders have been using everything they’ve learned at Hannah Senesh to teach each other this week! So far we’ve heard about the power of names in the book of Hosea (Ela); a midrash about how long it took Noah to build the ark (Isabelle and Eddie); a discussion about why Bat Paro decides to save baby Moshe (Daya and Neomi); the Witch of Endor (Jorden and Max); a midrash about Lilith (Risa); a discussion of creation (David); and Leah’s perspective (Tamar and Leah). Students have employed an impressive amount of engaging activities and questions, and have shown great promise as teachers. It’s been a joy being the student in my own classroom!

Shabbat Shalom,

Jessica

Math and Science

8th Grade continued their STEAM Bridge Project within their science and math classes. This week we have started construction of their bridges. We have applied their blueprint designs and they are purchasing materials as they build their bridges. Everyone is comparing their bridges each day and construction will continue next week..

Have a wonderful weekend,
