6th Grade News: 5/22-5/25/18

HUMANITIES This week in History students focused on ancient Greek wars and battles, learning about the Persian Wars and Peloponnesian War. We examined the “phalanx,” an ancient Greek battle formation, and made inferences about its effectiveness. We also talked about the “big ideas” and themes that came out of these wars, such as the notion that small groups can come together to accomplish large, seemingly impossible goals. Lastly, we listened to a fun, musical video that narrates the Peloponnesian War through art. See the video at this link if you’re interested! First Grade News

In writing, we started a new unit on book reviews. First graders recalled all the ways they know how to convince your reader and used this knowledge to share their opinions on books they have read. They watched videos of other students giving oral book reviews and practiced this skill as well.   In Social Studies, first graders explored the idea of recycling by making paper. Exploring new Chumashim and Textile Field Trip!

Chumash  Students were so excited to explore their new chumashim after yesterday’s fabulous Chumash Ceremony! They were especially excited to find verses in their new books that they recognized from class an the play. Immigration and Biographies – May 25

Dear Third Grade Families, Can you believe it’s already the end of May? Time is flying and, boy, are we having fun! During the end of April and beginning of May, each student took the time to read through the biography of his or her important person in history. As previously mentioned, students took notes about their person (be it King Tut, Steven Spielberg, Helen Keller or Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and placed those notes into at least four categories. May 22- May 25

Hebrew This week students started taking a series of assessments in all 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. A similar assessment was taken at the beginning of the year, the results we receive will allow us to track students progress in all 4 skills. These tests do not impact the students grade on their progress reports but are very important so we can track each students progress from the beginning of the year and from previous years and the MS as a whole. Hello Fourth Grade Families! Only three weeks left in the school year! June 15th is coming ever closer, but there’s still lots of learning and excitement going on at Hannah Senesh. This week, the fourth grade enjoyed one of the year’s highlights: our class trip to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Schnitzi restaurant, science exploration and much more!

Dear Kindergarten Families, We had a week full of learning and fun activities. We had so much fun visiting Yahli’s family’s restaurant and learning all about those who work there! In Math, we continued our unit on Subtraction. We practiced making a number sentence out of a “how many more?” problem. We learned how to look at pictures of items and compare which one has more and write a number sentence to describe the problem. We also learned how to solve simple subtraction problems.
