2021-2022 School Year

3/25/22

Our second grade scientists are learning about soil. We started our study with a KWL chart. K is what you know, W is what you want to know and L is what you learned (this part will get longer as we dive further into the unit and learn more). Here are some of the ideas that were discussed in class. What we know – It is organic. Soil is not dirt. Soil helps life grow. Soil is home to worms. Snails like wet soil. Plants and trees grow from soil. What we want to know – Can soil have too...

3rd Grade: 3/25

What a week it has been for 3rd grade! If nothing else, we are resilient! These past two weeks have been filled with highs and lows. We celebrated Purim together with games and crafts and mitzvot. It was exciting to see everyone in costume! We also had fun playing freeze tag with our buddies and exchanging mishloach manot with them. It was also nice seeing you all at conferences and sharing your child’s progress. It’s amazing how far they have come since the beginning of the year! We are continuing book clubs, practicing talking about our books and deepening our...

Judaics with Shira: 100 Years of the Bat Mitzvah This week students learned about the history of the Bat Mitzvah in America. We heard directly  from a Senesh 7th grader who was featured in this NPR segment. Students were assigned to listen to a podcast about a girl who is blind preparing for her bat mitzvah for homework. If they did not get a chance to do the assignment last night, please make sure they listen this weekend. Humanities with Hilary **reminder — please bring in a shoe box by Thursday, March 31 ** ** reminder 2 — Monday is going...

Kindergarten Blog 3/25

Dear Kindergarten Families,   The biggest event of the last two weeks was definitely Purim, complete with buddy time, the Purim carnival, and special activities with the 1st graders. It was so fun to come into school in costume and celebrate with the whole school! Going back to masks this week has been a bit of an adjustment, but everyone is doing really well to keep each other safe.   In Science, we continued with our scientific categorizations. We spoke about how sometimes it’s hard to figure out the best way to group different kinds of things! We looked at...

Dear Families, In Hebrew, the first graders choose their favorite animal and describe them in writing – their color, where they live, what they eat and what they love to do. We also learned how to write the letters tav, kaf and chaf in script. This week in Tefilah, the first graders were so excited to learn the last prayer from the Amida – hamevarech et amo yisrael bashalom. We discussed the meaning of peace and peaceful places. In Math we are practicing our doubles facts! Students learned about how math facts can be a helpful tool when adding and subtracting bigger numbers. We...

Humanities:  In reading, the classes have been hard at work in their Autism Book Clubs. Each group has been reading a book which features a person with autism as the narrator or main character. We have learned about neurodiversity and specifically what it means to be a person with autism, focusing on how each person is an individual with unique experiences. We talked about the characteristics and challenges of the characters in the books and each group created a one-pager with traits, relationships, and a quote that best represents the character. During writing, we are researching for argumentative essays. The...

Dear Families, This week, we celebrated the 100th day of school! Thanks for your help preparing our special 100-piece snacks! Students have been counting the days of school since the very beginning of the year, using paper clips to help track our process. Usually, we group them in sets of 10, to help us count faster and learn about place value. On this special day, however, we connected all of the sets and used them to limbo! We also made 100-Crowns. These paper hats each had 10 strips of paper on them. Each strip of paper had a collection of...

Judaics with Shira   This week, fourth graders were joined by our JOCI fellow Tova. Tova shared their unique identity with students and invited them to create their own identity Venn diagrams. Students were eager to hear Tova’s perspective to share their own identities and experiences with their table mates. It was a very enlightening and respectful discussion and activity. Dear Kindergarten Families,   We were pleasantly surprised by the warm weather this week, and though the cold returned, we are all excited for Spring!   This week in Science, we exercised our scientific observation skills by trying to notice all the little details of seemingly random objects. We discussed how a big part of what scientists do is try to group different kinds of things together so we can understand the world better. For example, over the last weeks we talked about living vs. nonliving, but within the group “living things” are the groups “animals”, “plants”, and “fungi”. Kindergarteners...
