3/25/22

Our second grade scientists are learning about soil. We started our study with a KWL chart. K is what you know, W is what you want to know and L is what you learned (this part will get longer as we dive further into the unit and learn more). Here are some of the ideas that were discussed in class.

What we know –
It is organic.
Soil is not dirt.
Soil helps life grow.
Soil is home to worms.
Snails like wet soil.
Plants and trees grow from soil.

What we want to know –
Can soil have too much water?
Can you grow life in dirt?
Where can you find soil other than on land?
How does soil soak up water?
What does soil taste like? How long does it take a seed to grow in soil?
How does it help plants grow?

What we learned –
Soil is made up of different types of particles.
There are many types of soil.

We discussed how our learned section is a living list and that we will be adding and growing our knowledge throughout this unit.

The students also touched and explored samples of soil, loam, clay and sand. They
discussed how they were similar and different and glued their own samples into an individual mini book.

Music with Heidi

In Music class, Second Graders played Chag Purim on the xylophones for Purim! This week, they reviewed the instruments of the orchestra in preparation for their study of Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

STEAM with Sammi

The 2nd grade have finished planning and drawing out their dream community parks over the last two weeks. The creative ideas the kids came up with are really amazing! Next week, we will learn some building with paper techniques so we can build our parks.
