Library Field Trip and Celebrating Pesach
Chag Pesach Sameach! We’ve spent the past few weeks preparing for Passover. Students read the story in Hebrew and made personal haggadot and seder plates. Our class seder was a culmination of all the learning we’ve been doing, as students were able to put items on their own seder plate and lead a class seder together. 5th Grade Week of 4/15
Chag Sameach! Please enjoy our 5th grade class updates below, and have a wonderful Pesach! Humanities In Humanities these past couple of weeks, we have been studying our new class text, Revolution is not a Dinner Party, by Ying Chang Compestine. The students are enthralled with this young adult historical fiction book about post-revolution Communist China. Our main focus in the unit is on personal and historical connections, as our students continue to study the theme of identity in its many forms. Science Science has been exploring the greenhouse effect and global warming these past few weeks. We watched a documentary about how global warming and how it changes the biomes we studied. Then we conducted an experiment to discovery how the greenhouse effect works. Students were outside with two thermometers, one inside a glass jar and one outside. They measured the temperature once a minute for 15 minutes. Then they wrote an official lab report in order to present their results. Kindergarten General Studies
Kindergartners were very busy with projects this week. In social studies we have been representing the block that Hannah Senesh sits on in three different media after out trip outside to document what we see. Some children are working on murals, some on paper collages, and some with building blocks. The goal is to represent the block accurately. For example, not all the buildings are the same height, some show an address or name, and they all have different items out front. Hello 4th Grade Families
General Studies with Mike This week in math class, we wrapped up our math unit on angles. Students learned how to draw and measure angles of specific sizes using protractors. They also learned the difference between acute, obtuse, and right angles. When we return from Spring Break, we will begin a new math unit on parallel and perpendicular lines. This is another quick unit that will mostly focus on vocabulary. Students are well into their next round of book clubs, all set during the Civil War. April 18, 2019 – A Trip Through Time
General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade Families, What an experience we had, this past Wednesday, traveling back to the mid-1600s! Last Tuesday, the Third Grade went on a field trip to The Wyckoff House Museum, in Brooklyn. It is the oldest standing house in New York City, built in 1652. During this year, Petrus Stuyvesant was Director of New Amsterdam, but Dutch and European Jews had not yet arrived in the New World. This week the 3rd grade finished their project – After School. They wrote about their activities after school and in the weekends, they read it and presented it. Attached you can find a video of your child presentation. The written project will be on the bulletin board. Happy Pesach
First Grade News
After two weeks of perfecting, mapping, and playing in our neighborhood, first graders were ready to say goodbye and send it home. We named our neighborhood “Megahood,” because it had so many different places in it. As we concluded our realistic fiction unit, we had the opportunity to celebrate our published series books with our fifth grade buddies! Then, we had a mini persuasive writing unit! Kindergarten General Studies
A new baby sister, covers for our information books, counting by two’s and fives, studying maps, and sending cars down ramps made from one, two or three blocks give you just a taste of the excitement this week in the Kindergarten General Studies Room. Naomi welcomed her new baby sister Alona and shared pictures and information with the rest of the class who listened attentively.
