Kindergarten General Studies

Kindergartners were very busy with projects this week.  In social studies we have been representing the block that Hannah Senesh sits on in three different media after out trip outside to document what we see.  Some children are working on murals, some on paper collages, and some with building blocks. The goal is to represent the block accurately.  For example, not all the buildings are the same height, some show an address or name, and they all have different items out front. Children also learned about some of the fixtures on the sidewalk that help the city function such as bike racks, fire alarms, paying stations for parking, and signs that a subway station is nearby. We will begin to display the projects as we finish them up.
In literacy we continued working on short vowel sounds and words that are spelled with a consonant/vowel/consonant pattern. As children begin to see and hear these patterns they become more able to sound out word on their own during Guided Reading and Reader’s Workshop.
In Math we have been working with the hundreds chart, continuing to count by twos, fives, and tens and looking for patterns in the chart. Another activity  is putting back together a hundreds chart that has been cut up into 5-6 pieces, using what you know about what numbers come before and after others.
Kindergartners were very excited to learn that Shelley’s birthday was this week.  Each of them made a beautiful collage flower with a describing sentence for a book for her. They also baked a cake and made icing (both from scratch) which they covered very generously with sprinkles in true Kindergarten fashion. We believe they were able to keep it a secret and had great fun shouting “Surprise!!” as she entered the room.  It was nice for them to see how much fun it can be to do something kind for someone else.
As the weather improves we will have the opportunity to do some gardening at school with Anne and take trips to both the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.  More on that later.
In the meantime, wishing you very  a Happy Passover and a wonderful week with family and friends.
Best wishes,
Dawn and Liz
