Kindergarten General Studies

A new baby sister, covers for our information books, counting by two’s and fives, studying maps, and sending cars down ramps made from one, two or three blocks give you just a taste of the excitement this week in the Kindergarten General Studies Room.

Naomi welcomed her new baby sister Alona and shared pictures and information with the rest of the class who listened attentively. We added her pictures to those of Liz and her baby and realized that we will have more to add to this baby gallery in the coming weeks.
We continue to work on our information books.  This week brought revisions, covers, and bindings.  Next week we will share the books with our stuffed animals and our fourth grade buddies.  Children are invited to bring one stuffed animal that will fit in their backpack on Thursday.  We will be using them on both Thursday and Friday, so children can either take the animals home on Thursday and bring them back on Friday or leave them here Friday night.
In math we practiced counting by two’s and fives.  Activities included counting coins, animals, Legos, and the girls in Madeline (“In two straight lines they broke their bread, brushed their teeth, and went to bed.”).  We played hop scotch with the numbers 2-20 counting by 2’s and the numbers 5-50 counting by 5’s.
In science we continued our study of motion by building ramps with blocks and seeing which ramps made the cars run fastest and farthest. We then experimented with what can make cars stop as they come down the ramp.
In social studies we began our study of maps by exploring maps of Brooklyn, the subway system, bike lanes, and the world.  According to one student, maps are “something you use when your phone does not work!”  We will continue the study by creating our own maps.
Lastly, the sixth grade is leading a coin drive to support two organizations that address hunger, CHIPS http://chipsonline.org/ and Food Bank https://www.foodbanknyc.org/. We read a book about CHIPS on Purim.  If you have coins that you would like to donate, please send then in an we will get them to the sixth grade.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Dawn and Liz
