This week the first grade teachers really enjoyed having families in our classroom community. Thank you for strengthening the school-home connection.  We love having you in the classroom and look forward to see families next week for Kesher Day on Monday and the Publishing Party on Wednesday. In Writing this week we have been working on publishing our stories. We learned how to revise our story and make sure our characters were not frozen.  We added dialogue and movement in order to unfreeze our characters in our small moments.  We also learned how to add what the character is thinking...

The first graders this week have been busy writing, learning and playing.  We have loved seeing parents at school, whether it is during parent teacher conferences or the Hannah Senesh tekes (ceremony). Our class opened the ceremony by singing “Eli Eli” in Hebrew and English, and showed paintings they made which were inspired by the song.  They were rightfully, very proud of themselves! In Writing, the students continued working on their journal entries.  In honor of our Hannah Senesh tekes we created our own journal entries and made them look old by staining them with tea.  We continued our writing...

Everyone in first grade was excited to have a full week of school! In Writing this week we continued working on our small moments writing by revising and making sure we are using a picture to add details.  We focused on: “When you are done you have just begun”.  We also have been learning about our school’s namesake, Hannah Senesh.  We learned that she was from Hungary and looked on a map of Europe to find the city she lived, Budapest.  We saw photographs of Hannah as a young girl and with her family.  We focused on the fact that...

This week in first grade we did a lot of sharing. Whether it was during morning meeting or about what animals are in our family, first graders are full of sharing as a classroom community. We enjoyed celebrating Toby and Ethan’s birthday. This week in Science we read a National Geographic book “A Tree For All Seasons.”  In the book we learned what happens in each season to a maple tree and the animals in the environment. We observed how trees change and why, and learned that even leaves have veins! In Writing, we worked on our small moments stories...

First grade had another joyous holiday week in 1st grade!  We have been busy celebrating Sukkot with one another and their 5th grade buddies.  They ate lunch in the Hannah Senesh sukkah on the roof, and another day had a special activity with buddies.  Each child created a sukkah out of graham crackers, marshmallow fluff, chocolate chips, sprinkles and licorice.  Delicious and sticky!  The first graders also celebrated the holiday by learning and saying the brachot (blessings) with the lulav and the etrog. Carolyn, the lower school counselor, came to our classroom to read “The Color Monster: A Book of...

This week in first grade there was a lot to celebrate!  From Lavi and Ethan’s birthday, to the 25th birthday of our school! First, we started the week off with an apple taste test. We used our observations in Science to describe what different kinds of apples looked like in terms of color and size.  We tasted Empire, Honey Crisp and Ginger Gold apples, and decided if they were sweet or sour.  The entire first grade voted on their favorite and the Empire apples won!  We also looked at the core of the apples and seeds.  Students noticed that after...

In Math this week we focused on one more and one less.  We also really...

This week in first grade we have been sharing and exploring, whether through learning how to play math games with partners, sharing personalized writing folders, or showing friends a structure we have built. In Reading we began looking at word families and patterns in spelling.  We also were introduced to finding a “just right book”.  Students book shopped in the classroom, making sure to find a book that was not too challenging, not too easy, but “just right”.  In read aloud books this week we explored the theme of apples.  We really enjoyed Apples by Gail Gibbons, which is a...

What an exploratory week we have had in first grade! We also wanted to say Happy Birthday Ruby! We really enjoyed having Ruby’s family in the classroom and celebrating together. First, we started off the week learning more about materials in our classroom. We practiced using the glue and scissors through guided discovery. We even created our own owls and penguins.
