First Grade News

What an exploratory week we have had in first grade! We also wanted to say Happy Birthday Ruby! We really enjoyed having Ruby’s family in the classroom and celebrating together.

First, we started off the week learning more about materials in our classroom. We practiced using the glue and scissors through guided discovery. We even created our own owls and penguins.

In Math, students received their new math workbooks and were excited to start using them!  We began our number sense unit by talking about numbers and relating them to objects.  For example, four apples is the same as four people.  As the week progressed, we continued practicing comparing numbers and objects. Some key words we have been using are: fewer than, more than, and the same. Lastly, we introduced students to a ten frame, and created our own giant ten frame for the classroom.  This math manipulative will help us explore and make connections with numbers.

In Writers Workshop, we are working on generating ideas. We brainstormed by thinking about all of the things we love and moments we have had doing things we love by creating a heart map. We look forward to exploring some of these topics and turning them into small moments writing pieces.

In Reading this week, we explored our library and learned about different author baskets.  We started  by reading Kevin Henkes’ Chesters Way and discussing themes of friendship and being open to others.

In Hebrew this week, we learned our first vowels, kamatz and patach and what sound the letter tav makes when you add those vowels. We reviewed some words that started with the letter tav like, tapuz (orange), tapuach (apple), tarnegolet (chicken) and tof (drum) and started to add words to our word wall. We started learning about Rosh Hashanah. We discussed how Rosh Hashanah is the world’s birthday and learned some of the important symbols of this special holiday, which are apples, honey, the shofar, a pomegranate, and a round challah.

In Yahadut, we learned about the importance of giving tzedakah, and how it is particularly important that we start off the New Year on the right note. We made a beautiful class tzedakah box that we will use every week to collect tzedakah during kabbalat shabbat. We added two pages to our siddurim. The first page is about the tefilah modeh ani. Each student shared about what he\she is thankful for. The second page is about the prayer mah tovu. We discussed what must happen in our classroom/home so it will be a good place. Our siddurim are looking beautiful and we cannot wait to continue to fill up our pages with prayers.

We closed out the week with a kirigami paper cut project. Students created their own woven place mats. They folded a piece of construction paper in half, cut parallel strips, and unfolded it. Then they cut strips of another piece of paper and wove strips into the first. We will use the place mats during snack and reinforce how to clean up our space and use table manners.

Art with Iviva:
Our first art class with Iviva started with a (re)introduction to the art room and a big welcome for new and returning students. We did one of our favorite fall activities — leaf rubbings. In the next few weeks, we will build on this initial idea to make collages and other works on paper. We can’t wait to see what we do next.
