First Grade: Week of October 30th

In preparation for our Hannah Senesh Tekes next week, first graders learned about the life of Hannah Senesh. In the general studies classroom, they learned about Hannah Senesh as a writer. We know a lot about her life because of the diary entries she kept. First graders listened to some of her diary entries and then wrote diary entries of their own.   As part of our study of our neighborhood, first graders will soon be interviewing community helpers to learn more about their jobs. This week we practiced our interview skills by interviewing each other.   First graders practiced...

First Grade: Week of October 23rd

First graders published their first stories this week! They each chose their favorite small moment story to revise, edit and, finally, publish. On Thursday we had a mini publishing party to celebrate all of their hard work! Their published stories are now in our own classroom library.   First grade mathematicians worked on subtractions strategies this week. They learned how count up, count back, and use their knowledge of number bonds to subtract.   We started reading groups this week. Reading group are a chance to practice reading and share books with a small group of peers.   We read...

First Grade: Week of October 16th

We had a fun and productive full week in first grade!   First grade writers are almost ready to publish their small moment stories. This week we studied the book “Night of the Veggie Monster” by George McClements to try and see how he makes his writing exciting. We noticed that he uses ellipses to build excitement and tells exact motions to help the reader make a movie in her mind. We also picked out stories to publish. We revised them on Thursday, and will start to edit on Monday.   In Math we are working on addition. First graders...

First grade mathematicians reviewed number bonds this week. Number bonds help us think of different ways to break apart and put together numbers. First graders explored giant number bonds using hula hoops on the rug. They also made their own number bonds that are on display outside our classroom.   When we look at all the writing first graders have done so far, it’s hard to believe this is only the fourth week of school! This week we celebrated all of the writing we have done by having a museum walk. Each first grader picked his or her favorite story...

First Grade News

It’s hard to believe this is only our second week of school! First graders have already written multiple stories, worked in their new math workbooks, and learned many of our classroom routines. We started handwriting this week. First graders have learned “magic c,” “o,” and “s.” We call the letter “c” magical because it can be turned into the letters o, d, a, g, and q. First grade writers are writing small moment stories: stories that zoom in on a particular moment in their lives. We’ve learned the first four steps of our writing process: think of an idea, plan,...

First Grade News

We had an exciting and productive first week of school! First graders have been thrilled to be with their old friends and to meet new ones.   Next Monday, September 11th, please join Karen, our school psychologist, for “Coffee with Karen.” She will be discussing all things first grade related! “Coffee with Karen” takes place in our school library at 8:15 AM.   On the first day of school, we began our “kindness chain.” Each time a student in our class does something kind, they can add a link to our paper chain. Our goal is to have the chain...
