After two weeks of perfecting, mapping, and playing in our neighborhood, first graders were ready to say goodbye and send it home. We named our neighborhood “Megahood,” because it had so many different places in it. As we concluded our realistic fiction unit, we had the opportunity to celebrate our published series books with our fifth grade buddies! Then, we had a mini persuasive writing unit! Kindergarten General Studies
A new baby sister, covers for our information books, counting by two’s and fives, studying maps, and sending cars down ramps made from one, two or three blocks give you just a taste of the excitement this week in the Kindergarten General Studies Room. Naomi welcomed her new baby sister Alona and shared pictures and information with the rest of the class who listened attentively. Hebrew This week the 8th grade has finished reviewing the Future tense and we have starting preparing for our trip to Israel. The students are all enthusiastic and excited! Next Tuesday, the students will have a culminating quiz on the Future tense. Math The probability that 7Y can tell you all about probability is certain! They’d also be able to tell you that a probability that is certain has a 100% chance to occur. They can talk about the outcomes of coin tosses, rolling dice, or spinning a spinner. They can also tell you a bit about how to use things like possibility diagrams or tree diagrams for more complex probability problems. Bingo, Creation of Adam, Purim and Pesach
Social Studies We began our new unit on another cultural community represented in Brooklyn: the Caribbean! We looked at a map of the Caribbean and described what we know about the Caribbean, and what information we can gleam from a map. Students shared that the Caribbean has many small islands, is a hot climate, and has many beaches. To learn more about what life is like in the Caribbean compared to New York, we read the book Angelina’s Island by Jeanette Winters. We started learning about Pesach this week! First we made a chart of all the things we already know. It was a long list! Then we talked about the word seder/סדר and that it means order. The Pesach seder is a time when we follow the directions and tell the story of the Jewish people’s freedom from slavery while leaving Egypt. Hello 4th Grade Families
General Studies with Mike: This week in math class, we wrapped up our math unit on adding and subtracting decimals. Students can now add and subtract up to the hundredths place value. We began a new chapter on angles, and students have been introduced to several new vocabulary words. Feel free to incorporate words like “acute,” “obtuse,” and “right angle” into discussions at home. We also kicked off a new round of book clubs, with students reading historical fiction books set during the Civil War. 5th Grade Week of 4/1
Another successful week in 5th grade! Please enjoy our classroom updates below, and have a restful weekend! Humanities In Humanities these past couple weeks, we have been wrapping up our study of Tuck Everlasting. We finished our essays on symbols, and concluded our unit by watching the film version of the text. First Grade News
First grade writers work hard to publish their series books. Each first grader wrote at least two books in a series about the same characters. We will celebrate their writing with a mini publishing party next week. As part of our science unit on organisms, each first grader planted their own seeds. We’ll observe these plants each week as they grow into our very own herb garden. After one week, we noticed that some seeds had sprouted!
