Discovering the Power of the People

Dear Third Grade Families, This week marked the beginning of a new unit on persuasive writing! Before students start writing their own opinion pieces, they are working as a group to craft a persuasive and convincing speech about why Choice Time should be incorporated into the third grade schedule. Once complete, this speech will be presented to Shelley for her consideration. Students worked in partnerships to brainstorm reasons to support the thesis statement. While the majority of third graders are in favor of Choice Time, there are a few who chose to support the counter argument. After students shared their...

First Grade News: Week of January 15th

First grade writers have been working hard on their information books. This week they looked closely at their writing to discover how they can make it even better. We looked at a checklist of all the things they’ve learned so far, and first graders identified things they are doing really well and things they can work on. We challenged each first grader to make a goal for their writing. Some goals are to add more details or to make the beginning more exciting. We continued our study of information writing in our reading groups. Some groups read non-fictions books and...

HUMANITIES: This week in Literature, students created and shared collaborative projects related to the novels they read about ancient Egypt: Pharaoh’s Daughter and The Golden Goblet. In History class, students explored an incredible artifact from ancient Egypt: King Khufu’s funeral boat. The boat, which was buried at the base of the Pyramid of Giza, was discovered in 1954 and was painstakingly reassembled and reconstructed by a team...
