Kindergarten Blog 2/5/21

Dear Families,

We are Super Readers!!  Kindergartners have been learning about and practicing the many powers they have, to help them become Super Readers. Ask your child if they can name and explain some of these powers. To celebrate the amazing progress they have all made in becoming Super Readers, on Thursday everyone was given a red cape, an eye mask, and a magic wand! What fun it was to read our books dressed as superheroes!

Thank you to the many families who have contributed to the food collection for the local Community Fridges. The message on one community fridge reads: Take what you need. Leave what you can.  Every morning children record what they have brought in on a food graph, and we review the simple reason we are collecting food: We have enough and many people do not. Children are excited to see the boxes in each pod fill up. The collection will continue through February 12.

In Math, we are practicing Counting On. This is a tool that can help us in several ways, such as attendance, or counting large numbers. When we count on, we do not start from 1, but rather, begin at a higher number. For example, if we know that we have a stick of ten cubes, and four extras, we can count more quickly by starting with ten (the number we know we have), and then counting on the others: 11, 12, 13, 14!

In Hebrew continued reading the book Caspion -The Little Silver Fish. The book describes friendship and how to help relationships. We learned about opposites: big-small, high-low, fast-slow. The children learned to describe themselves with the phrases: I am tall I am short. In Judaic studies we reviewed the creation of the world, celebrated Kabbalat Shabbat, and talked about this week’s Torah portion

Shabbat Shalom,

Dawn, Talia, Anat, and Atalya

Music with Heidi

In Music, Kindergarteners have begun a new unit, the Instruments of the Orchestra! This week, we began our study of the String Section by learning about violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Students also received scarves for their music bags, and we discussed how we would be using them in music class to embody high to low pitches, fast to slow tempos and the emotional tone of music.
