First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, this week we started learning about clothing. We talk about all the clothing that we are wearing during the winter, like: cova (hat), tzaeif (scarf), kefafot (gloves), meeil (coat), michnasayim (pants) and garbyim (socks). We learned the verbs lovesh (to wear, masculine) and loveshet (to wear, feminine) and Students spent time writing sentences about what they are wearing in the winter.

In Parasha, we read the story of Parashat Yitro where the Israelites go to Mount Sinai and receive the Ten Commandments and We discussed the significance of each commandment.

In science we learned about various clouds and their formation. We had fun creating homemade puffy paint that helped us depict the different clouds as well. By using our fingers and plastic utensils we were able to shape and form various cirrus clouds (wispy clouds) and cumulonimbus clouds (storm clouds). Soon we’ll be observing them outside!

In music 1st graders learned the difference between songs in 4/4 and songs in 2/4, deepening their understanding of time signatures. They examined and performed the rhythms and lyrics of a 2/4 song called “Snow”.

This week in phonics and reading 1st grade word detectives started to notice patterns in multisyllabic words, contractions, 3 letter blends, and words with double consonants.  Next week, we will finish our mystery unit by learning about compound words and look-alike words then finish with a celebration of our detective work!  After February break, we will then start our next unit “From tip to tail: reading across words where we will learn about word endings and blends.

Shabbat Shalom,

The First Grade Team
