Reptiles and the Letter Y!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We had lots of fun this week in Kindergarten! We continued talking about using kind words and being careful not to hurt others with our words. We read the story “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. We talked about using kind words and doing nice things to fill each other’s buckets.

In Math, we continued learning about Time. We read “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle and created our own pages saying what time the grouchy ladybug met an animal of our choice. We also practiced telling time on the hour with clocks. Additionally, we learned about the months of the year and practiced putting them in order.

In English Language Arts, we learned the letter Yy and the sound /y/ it makes (as in ‘yarn’). We practiced forming upper and lowercase Yy letters using our Handwriting Without Tears books, wooden planks, and finding words that start with Y and drawing pictures of them.  In our Words Their Way Spelling program, we practiced reading and sorting words with short vowel /a/ and /u/ sound.

In Writing, we continued our Persuasive Writing Unit. We read “Earrings” by Judith Viorst and wrote stories about something we wish we could have or do. We used the words dear, because, please, and love in our letters.

In Science, we continued our unit Exploring Plants and Animals. We learned about different types of reptiles and what they all have in common. We played bingo and charades to help us learn about different types of reptiles.

Judaic and Hebrew

This week we continued learning about Passover and the seder night.  The children acted out parts of the story of Passover and the Exodus from Egypt. The children sang the songs “Ma Nishtana”, “Kadesh Urchatz” and “Simcha rabah” and continued working on their Hagada. They drew pictures of objects used on the Seder night, such as Karpas, which is vegetables (usually parsley, celery or potatoes ) dipped in salty water, Charoset, which is a mixture of grinded apple and nuts as well as matzot (Matzas) yayin le Kiddush (wine for Kiddush) etc..

We continued learning about the main characters of the story of Exodus: Moshe, Pharaoh  Yocheved (Moshe’s mother), Amram ( Moshe’s father), Aharon (Moshe’s brother), Miriam (Moshe’s sister), Tziporah (Moshe’s wife), and Batya ( Pharaoh’s daughter).

The children practiced saying what they like about Pesach in Hebrew, for example:  “Ani ohev matza (I like matza) or “Ani ohev et Moshe” (I like Moshe). Finally, we read the books “Passover” by Schotter, and “What is Passover” by Harriet Ziefert as well as “Let My People Go”.

Have a good weekend!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rachel, Regina, Irit, and Ilana
