Snow Day in Spring

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It has been an exciting week here in the fourth grade. Not only did we go on a field trip and get an unexpected snow day, but we have a lot of thrilling events coming up next week. We will be presenting our Pesach projects, enjoying a pre-holiday celebration, having our poetry cafe, and finishing our science project with Sammi! On a more bittersweet note, we will also be saying goodbye to our general studies teacher Miriam as she goes on maternity leave. We hope you will stop by to wish her well.
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team
PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:
  • Thursday, March 29 – Miriam’s Last Day in School
  • Friday, March 30 – Sunday, April 8 – Pesach Vacation, NO SCHOOL

HEBREW with Ilana:

This week the 4th grade learned the last story in their workbook “Food for the Coat”. We practiced reading and comprehension. The students had to practice reading at home and have to record themselves. Due to the snow day they can do the recording until Monday. Please make sure that your child is practicing  and recording. For recording they can use :  vocaroo.com or any other website or video. Please email it to : ilanahebrew@gmail.com

Shabbat Shalom

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
This week in Judaics was dedicated to the fourth graders’ Pesach projects. Students have been working very hard to showcase what they have learned from the Haggadah this year in creative ways that play to their strengths. They are also excited to take their projects home and share them with you over Pesach! We also finished up our Pesach unit by learning the original Aramaic words (and tune) to the closing song of the Seder (and hidden history lesson), Chad Gadya. Next week, our students present their projects to the class, play a unit-closing Jeopardy game, and celebrate Pesach together with songs, dancing, and drums. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
This week has not been a typical one with field trips and snow days! In reading, we have been getting very excited about our upcoming poetry cafe. You probably have already heard fourth graders practicing their poems at home. We have learned about various tools performers use to bring their poems to life when performing. They are really coming along. In social studies, we have rounded out our study of the Civil War and Slavery by visiting Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights. We learned about the history of this church, special visitors they have had (including Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr.), got to touch a part of Plymouth Rock and even got to see a room where slaves hid on the Underground Railroad. In writing, fourth graders have put the finishing touches on their opinion writing pieces and they are ready to publish. Last but not least, math has been devoted to geometry — lines, angles and shapes!

SCIENCE with Sammi:
The fourth grade scientists have officially wrapped up their food chemistry unit! As their final project, students were given 4 marshmallows to run all the nutrient tests they have learned (starch, carbohydrates, glucose, fats). The materials were set up on the side of the room, students were given lab books and instructions, and the rest was up to them! I was incredibly impressed with the lab skills your students showed as they navigated through the tests and answered lab questions. While moving through the tests, students were recording their process in videos and pictures. These videos and pictures were then put together in the clips app (which students had learned and practiced a few months back). Their final videos are amazing and will be shared next week in both the school hallway (via QR codes) and an email. After break the fourth graders will begin an Animal Studies unit.
