March 12 – March 16

Math

7X this week solved simple linear inequalities, such as ax + b > c, compared the solutions of inequalities with different inequality signs such as x > 3 and x ≥ 3, and represented the solution of a linear inequality on a number line. The unit test is currently scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd.

7Y this week found the area of a parallelogram and trapezoid, and solved problems involving perimeters and areas of composite plane figures. The unit test is currently scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd.

Judaic Studies

Students are working on their project for our Mishna Brachot unit: finding interesting visual ways to show how the Mishna is structured, and designing their own clock to reflect the 3 different ways of telling time described in the Mishna. I am loving the creativity and problem solving!

Humanities

Students completed our short story unit this morning with strong discussions about Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventure of the Speckled Band. I loved hearing students grapple with the complex ideas of these texts. I was also incredibly moved by seeing my students participate in the National School Walkout. It was profound to walk with them to Borough Hall, and I was honored to read their reflections on the entire experience.

Science

Students this week designed beach front property and used water to see how erosion affects their models. The models and buildings where cleaver and when water was introduced it was amazing to see how it affected their design. We also had a hands on activity that investigated how freshwater and saltwater have different densities. They had to make four beckers one with freshwater and three with increased levels of saltwater. Then they placed food dye in the beakers and attempted to create a rainbow test tube. Using the most density solution first and the least density solution last, they were able to create these rainbow test tubes.
