5th Grade Week of 3/12

Wow! What a week! We are so proud of our 5th graders for their wholehearted participation in the national walkout on Wednesdays. Their voices were loud and clear! They give us so much hope and optimism for the future. Please enjoy the updates below, and have a good weekend!

HUMANITIES: So much to talk about in Humanities this week. We started our new book, Revolution is not a Dinner Party, by Ying Chang Compestine, and studied the history behind the book. Students dove into incredibly complex topics with zeal, such as economic theory, Communism, and the pitfalls of dictatorship. In Social Studies, we studied Genghis and Kublai Khan and Marco Polo, and reflected upon the walkout while looking towards the future. Have a good weekend!-Tony

MATH5th graders are coming home with their Unit 4 test today. They are to correct the problems by Wednesday, March 21stThis week, they learned to find the areas of rectangles and squares!-Tony

JUDAICS: “This week Dammara was teaching us Judaics. We learned the text about when Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt for grain during the famine. Joseph knew it was his brothers but his brothers didn’t know it was him! The brothers we scared because this guy in charge ( Joseph) was being mean to them. He said they were spies and the brothers begged that they were honest. If I was Joseph I would probably know that they were honest but I would want to test them. I really liked acting out how the characters were feeling. I think I did a great job translating! – Emma

SCIENCEStudents this week were in science rotation stations in order to finish their discoveries with circuits. This allowed them the opportunity to work with me in small groups with a circuit building kit. They created alarms, light detectors, and other amazing device models. This gave them the chance to physically work with circuit clips, resistors, wires and other elements in circuits. Next week we will start learning about simple machines and continue with our hands on discoveries.-Mike
