K Blog 1/21

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week, we began a science project in growing pepper plants and had a special hot chocolate surprise during a (somewhat) snowy Morning Meeting while reading Ezra Jack Keats’ The Snowy Day.

We had a discussion about the fact that COVID has been hard on all of  us but particularly difficult for the doctors and nurses who work with COVID patients.   We made pop up cards that will be delivered to doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

In Writing Workshop we are continuing the Show and Tell unit with books about our favorite places.  Students are thinking about three parts of their favorite places and writing a page for each part, starting with pictures that they will label.  We will then return to each page to add more and more details.

In Reading we continued to use Pointer Power and had the chance to do seesaw partner reading where children take turns reading a page.  We talked about different ways to help a classmate if they are stuck on a word or make a mistake.

In Science, we took a close look at bell pepper seeds and made careful scientific sketches, and began the germination process by folding our seeds into damp paper towels. We will check back in next week to see if we see roots that can be planted!

In Morning Meeting in Hebrew class, the children talk about how they feel, and we are incorporating into our winter vocabulary how they feel about the weather and winter activities, and winter clothing. We read “HaMitriah HaG’dolah Shel Abba”, about a big umbrella and friendship that sparked conversation on what it means to be a good friend. We worked on a colorful and tactile umbrella project with crushed tissue paper to refresh our color vocabulary.

In Judaic Studies, we are returning to Creation, going over everything we learned previously, and beginning the sixth day, which is all about wild animals.

Shabbat Shalom,

Atalya, Dawn, and Anat
