HUMANITIES
7th graders have been working hard in Humanities, blending their English Language Arts and Social Studies classes across several different units and projects. They have been writing persuasive letters on topics of their choice, practically preparing for more focused and research-based letters centered around the seventh grade’s service project focused on housing insecurity.
At the same time, we are reading a book of short stories curated by Ellen Oh entitled, Flying Lessons and Other Stories, in which we are focusing on the structure and elements of a short story while analyzing how the diverse series of characters in each story interact with their different worlds. Students are also reading and analyzing the U.S. Constitution. They will incorporate elements of short story structure and the Constitution into a creative project in the coming weeks.

HEBREW

Dear parents,

We have had some very productive weeks. We are practicing discussing our feelings and thoughts about clothes, and how do these influence our decisions. Students have been practicing interviewing each other and describing favorite outfits from childhood.
In addition, we have been filming short skits based on fables and learned new Israeli songs about boots.
On Tuesday, Naomi taught us a song that she translated from Korean to Hebrew. The class really enjoyed this activity.
I wish everyone a relaxing weekend,

Andreea

MATH

The 7th grade spent the past few weeks learning about different aspects of Ratios and Proportional Relationships. They learned about equivalent ratios, ratios involving percentages, rates, unit rates, how to use proportions to set up equations using the constant of proportionality, and most importantly, how to apply these concepts in the real world. Next, they will explore the realm of Geometry and Measurement. They’ll learn about concepts such as area, circumference, surface area, volume, scale drawings, and cross-sections.

SCIENCE

After our successful Shoebox Machine project before the break, students have started to learn about environmental issues and biomes. Students selected five environmental issues and five inventions that can help resolve or reduce that issue. We then started to study the different biomes in the world. Students researched biomes and used interactive software to learn what plants and animals are in each biome. Then they virtually created their own diorama of a biome and wrote a letter to their science teacher explaining what they observed in their biome. After our studies about biomes, we focused on water pollution. Students were challenged to create water filters in order to clean a beaker with dirty water. This challenge allowed students to discover the concept of filtration and apply their engineering skills to the challenge. With our first round of testing complete, students were able to filter the dirty water. Soon we will learn how to improve their designs and build a second round of filtration devices. I cannot wait to see if they increase their efficiency.
