Jewish Museum, Publishing Party and more!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We had a great week in Kindergarten.  We were preparing for our Publishing Party and practicing our song and dance for the Hanukkah Play! On Thursday, we had a great time at the Jewish Children’s Museum in Brooklyn. The children went to a Kosher Supermarket, visited Creation Exhibit, looked for oil in the Hanukkah exhibit, walked “on Shabbat Table,” made oil out of real olives and lit the menorah with it. Finally, we did a very exciting Game Show. Everyone had a great time!

In Math, we are learning numbers 0-20. We have been using ten frames to help us count. We practice counting to and writing numbers from 0-16. We also talked about using shapes to make designs, and created artwork using geometric shapes.

In English Language Arts, we learned the letter Ll and the sound /l/ it makes (as in ‘lion’). We practiced forming upper and lowercase letters Ll using our Handwriting Without Tears books, wooden planks, and finding words that start with L and drawing pictures of them.

In Writing, we are have been practicing reading and finishing up our “How To…” Books for our publishing party on Friday. We were so excited to share our books with our 4th grade buddies and our families!

We began a new Author Study on fun and engaging books of Dr. Seuss!

In Science, we continued our forces and motion unit. We raced cars to discover which cars went the fastest and slowest down the ramp. We also took turns going fast and slow along a track and compared our times during the fast versus slow race.

In Social Studies, we learned about different homes around the world. We talked about our own homes and drew pictures of them. We even learned our address if we did not already know it! Please ask your child about your address and practice it!

Hebrew and Judaics

This week we focused on numbers and counting . We counted the days in the calendar as well as other items such as coins, blocks, and other  manipulatives.. We celebrated the upcoming Chanukah holiday by playing the dreidel game in which each child had to earn 18 coins in order to win. Each letter on the dreidel has a value so the children practiced adding points,  counting in Hebrew , and saying the phrase ” Nes Gadol Haya Sham” as well as the corresponding letters  Nun, Gimel, Hey and Shin. We also practiced related vocabulary to the Chag such as : Levivot – latkes , sufganiyot- donuts),  chanukiyah- Chanukah menorah , sevivon- dreidel, nerot- candles ,  kad Shemen- pitcher of oil .

As we continue to learn about the upcoming Hannukah, we sang songs and danced the “Banu Choshech Legaresh” song, as well as other songs such as, ״Chanukah Chanukah״, ״ Ner li Ner li..״. In addition, we completed beautiful art projects such as pictures of  Chanukiyot which will be sent home next week.

This week we read the book “Haarye Sheaahav Toot” and “It’s Hanukkah!” .

On Thursday we visited the Jewish Children’s Museum and made our own Shemen Zayit ( olive oil).

Throughout the week we also prepared for our wonderful Hebrew play. The kids were engaged and so happy to act, sing and play.

Finally, we learned about the fourth day of creation In which g-d created the sun- shemesh, moon- yareach, and stars- kochavim. We discussed the different planets in the solar system and their Hebrew names  (maarechet hashemesh) for example : Venus- Noga, Mars – maadim, Jupiter- Tzedek and Saturn- Shabtai.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rachel, Regina, Irit, and Ilana
