First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, we learned the words aroch (long) and katzar (short) and learned how to use those words when speaking and writing. The students also wrote about their hair and the color of their eyes using aroch, katzar, yesh li (I have) and ein li (I do not have). We wrote lots of sentences and continued to practice our reading.

In Tefila, we learned a new prayer from the Amida called melech ohev tzedakah umishpat. We spoke about the rules that we have in our classroom and in America and how they help us stay safe and be better people. We have learned so many of the prayers from the amidah and we are looking forward to learning the rest!

This week Parasha is Parashat Ki Tissa. We learned about the golden calf and that the Israelites made a bad choice. We talked about how everyone makes mistakes (that it is okay), and it is important for us to try and correct those mistakes. We also spoke about the people who worked at the mishkan – the Kohanim and the Kohen Gadol and thought about a special job that we have, just like the special job of the Kohanim.

These past few weeks have been soo exciting for us! Moving pods have allowed us to build upon old friendships and create new connections. In science we took time to get to know one another. We did this through a puzzle activity. On each piece of the puzzle we drew what is closest in our hearts. We then traded pieces and compared what make us similar and different from each other. Together we created an entirely new puzzle using each other’s pieces of what is closest in our hearts.

In writing workshop we have started our nonfiction chapter books. We are  planning our books by thinking of a topic, saying everything we know about it on our fingers, then writing out our chapters in a table of contents!  1st graders are writing many, many pages in their teaching books and are learning how to narrow down their topics and organize their pages by writing chapter titles instead of sketching. We are making our books more interesting and informative by adding introductions and comparisons.

Shabbat Shalom,
