Kindergarten Blog 3/5/21

Dear Families,

This week, we celebrated the 100th day of school! Students celebrated by counting to 100 as a group, making necklaces with 100 beads, doing a puzzle of the number 100 filled with snap words, and more!

In Judaics we went deeper into the Purim story and practiced telling it ourselves. We learned about the special mitzvot of Purim: Hear the Megillah, distribute Mishloach Manot (packages of food), donate/volunteer for Matanot L’evyonim to the less fortunate. It was so exciting to see everyone all dressed up, and we had fun listening to the big kids read from the Megillah. We also made our own Purim carnival! Kids created their own games, and had a ton of fun! Check out pictures below!

In Hebrew we learned a new song about a dancing clown that we performed on zoom for the whole school.

In writing we have started our second unit on writing true stories. We are talking a lot about making work easier to read by being sure to leave spaces between words, including the beginning, middle and ending sounds of words, and making sure that the words go with the pictures. Some are beginning to add punctuation.
In social studies we have begun a unit on maps and globes. On Friday students had the chance to look at globes, world maps, subway maps, maps of Brooklyn, and biking maps. Soon children will begin making their own maps.

We are looking forward to seeing you for Parent/Teacher Conferences in the coming weeks!

Shabbat Shalom,

Music with Heidi

In Music this week, Kindergarteners reviewed the String Section. Then they learned about the Woodwind Section of the Orchestra: piccolo, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon (and saxophone). We watched an orchestra play The Tea Dance from The Nutcracker and noted the alternation between high and low pitches in the piece. Then we danced those highs and lows with our scarves while watching the ballet version of the piece.
