Field Trip!!
Dear Third Grade Families,
It was another very busy week in Third Grade! Third Graders went on their first field trip of the year to the Eastern Woodland Indian exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. It’s one thing to read and visualize in one’s mind what life was like for the Lenape people, but this field trip added great substance to the students’ understanding. Students relished the opportunity to see first-hand, artifacts and models from the Lenape and Delaware Native American Tribes, including tools used for hunting, men and women’s clothing, musical instruments, and life-like models of scenes from daily life.
Back in the classroom students have been hard at work, continuing to research the Lenape in preparation for our publishing party on December 1st. Students were placed in partnerships and assigned a specific topic to research (i.e. clothing, roles in society, and shelters). In Writing, students learned how to take notes on important facts from a variety of nonfiction books pertaining to their topic, as well as how to organize their research into subtopics. Next week, third graders will begin drafting their expository pieces with their partner.
Activities you can do with your student:
- Practice lines (students have their scripts in their homework folder)
- Talk about what materials (shells, animal hide/fur, wood, corn husk, and stone) they saw throughout the exhibit at the museum
- While on your Thanksgiving travels — be on the lookout for interesting rocks or minerals! They can be brought into Science, when we return from Thanksgiving, and Third Graders will be creating their own “Rock and Mineral Museum”
- EITHER pictures of the rock or the actual rock
Dates to know:
- No School: Thursday, November 23; Friday, November 24 (Thanksgiving)
- Coffee with Karen: December 1, 8:15 – 8:45am
- Publishing Party: December 1, 8:45 – 9:30am
Shabbat Shalom!
Best,
Hilary and Alisa

This week the Third Grade had their very first Shoresh quiz/game. Some students were nervous, some were excited, but everyone gave it their all and turned in great work! Next week, we move on to the story of Parshat Lech Lecha and get into the minds of Avram and Sarai!

This week the 3rd Grade worked on question words, they practiced writing questions and asking questions to each other out loud. They also worked on writing sentences using verbs and infinitive (to do something). In addition the students started to write a short paragraph about a trip using their own vocabulary and the vocabulary they’ve learned so far.
