Chinese New Year 2/10/2022

In second grade we celebrated the Lunar New Year! Welcome to the year of the….TIGER! The tiger is known as the third Zodiac in Western culture known for their fiery passion, daring, and fearlessness.
Many of our second grade friends were born in the year of the horse which is symbolized by their popularity, energy and confidence. Others are the snake who are considered wise, reserved, and deep thinkers.

We learned all about the traditions and customs of celebrating the New year including food, family and legends such as the Nian monster. Did you know that long noodles are eaten to symbolize a long life?

We were lucky enough to have Marisa shared photographs and experiences from her childhood as she grew up in an enriched cultural background.

The students created paper dragons to celebrate the Lunar New Years. Ask your child if they can spot theirs!

In Music class, Second Graders have started their xylophone unit, learning about and practicing basic xylophone techniques. They have learned the major scale, and, this week, they learned the pentatonic scale. The Korean song, Arirang, that they learned for Lunar New Year is based on the pentatonic scale – they have continued to sing the song and are looking forward to learning to play it on xylophone.
