Kindergarten Blog 11/12

The biggest event of the week was certainly getting to see our Fourth Grade Buddies again. Activities included Fourth Graders reading stories to the Kindergartners, playing a game of Sharks and Sailors, and Kindergartners teaching the hand motions to and singing This Land is Your Land.  We look forward to seeing the Buddies again soon.

We continue to love singing each morning and are working on singing one of our favorites, This Pretty Planet, as a round. Here is a link to Tom Chapin singing it.  We listen to this frequently at snack time.  This Pretty Planet

In preparation for the all school food drive to stock the Community Fridges we read a book called Maddi’s Fridge (Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt)in which a girl realizes that a friend has very little food in her refrigerator and figures out a way to help her.  We talked about the fact that our refrigerators are very full and that we can also help out those who don’t have enough food by contributing food to the food drive. We also decorated the boxes that will be used by the entire school!

Children can start bringing in food on Monday, November 15th.  A list of items that are being collected went home on Friday. Kindergartners should bring their items to the classroom where we will count and sort them.

In Reading we read a book called the Carrot Seed ( The Carrot Seed – Ruth Krauss – Kids Books Read Aloud – Spring Bedtime Stories for Kids) and paid close attention to how well the pictures go with the words, something that Kindergartners are working on in their own stories.  Students then each got their own copy of the book and retold the story, making good use of the pictures. Students also continued to read the books in their book baggies.

In math we had our first opportunity to explore a variety of math materials that will be used throughout the year.  Pattern Block and Snap Cubes were the clear favorites, as children created designs and structures. We continued to work on learning how to write numbers, this week focusing on 5-8. Some of them are very tricky!

In Hebrew, we continued with our routine in the morning. Each kid gets his or her turn to be the teacher in front of the class and greet the other children in Hebrew. We also continued learning our colors. The children describe the colors of the clothes they are wearing in Hebrew: ani lovesh michnasaim b’tzevah kachol (I am wearing blue pants). Last week we started on opposite words and this week we added more opposite pairs to our lesson. For example: patuach and sagur (open and closed) and yamin and smol (right and left). We are also learning body parts, such as yadaim and raglaim (hands and feet).

In Judaic Studies, we reviewed the three days of creation. We recite our tfilot every morning and we learn what each tfila means. We sang and learned about Modeh Ani and then each child drew a picture of what they are thankful for. We also spoke about the Parsha of the Week. This week it’s Za’yetzeh. On Friday we do kabalat shabbat and wish each other a good weekend and Shabbat Shalom!

We enjoyed speaking with many of you on Thursday about your fabulous children and look forward to speaking with the rest of you on Monday.

Shabbat Shalom,

The K Team
