November 11: Learning All Around!

Humanities:  Early hominins, character identity charts, generating memories for personal narrative, the Neolithic Revolution… these are just a few of the things we’re learning about in Humanities. We are almost done reading Wonder. We have tracked character development and created identity charts for each character, citing the text to support our ideas. We talked about each characters physical traits, emotional traits, motivations, problems, response to difficulties, and how the character acts in different situations. Once we finish Wonder, we will move into book clubs. We have written poetry and an essay about the history and meaning of our names for...

HUMANITIES On Wednesday, the students conducted mock trials in which they either defended or prosecuted British soldiers who were involved in the events of March 5, 1770, known to history as the Boston Massacre. The trials culminated weeks of research, collaborative work, and writing, all while weaving the events of 1770 Boston into the larger picture of Colonial America. Ask your children what they thought of their performances; odds are they are harder on themselves than the jury! We are almost done reading the historical fiction novel, Chains, which is narrated by an enslaved black girl during the American Revolution. We...

3rd Grade: 11/12

Reading, Writing, and Social Studies: Our three disciplines have merged these past two weeks as we began working on our Lenape projects. We started by looking at non-fiction books and some of the features. We noticed tables of contents, indexes, glossaries, fact boxes, pictures, diagrams, and more. We then focused on how to takes notes and “learn” from non-fiction text. The first thing we do is find the main idea of the passage. Then we can look for the details that support that main idea. When we write this down, we call it boxes and bullets. The main idea and...

We capped off our studies with a Sigd Kabbalat Shabbat in the classroom, courtesy of Bechol Lashon. This week we began a new unit on Hannah Senesh, the namesake of our school. We focused on understanding important events in Hannah’s life through the format of a timeline. We asked questions such as How much time passed from one event to the next? How did this event make Hannah feel? How did this event lead to other events in Hannah’s life?...

Judaic Studies: The 2nd graders students were excited to learn about Chanukah. We learned how much it is important to keep your identity and when lighting the candles of Chanukah we remember the miracles of Chanukah and that we are part of a community. The students learned the difference between the Menorah and the Chanukiah. And while learning about the customs of the holiday, each student wrote in script sentences relating to Chanukah. Hebrew: The 2nd graders start reading sentences and short stories containing all of the Hebrew vowels, including the brachot of Chanukah and the songs they were singing....

Dear Families, It was so great to see many of you at conferences this week! We look forward to seeing the rest of you on Monday. Please enjoy these pictures from school this week! Shabbat Shalom, Liz, Talia, Anat, and Noa   PS. Here are a few jokes from a book we read this week about the weather: Why did the woman go outside with her purse open? She expected some change in the weather! What does a cloud wear under its clothes? Thunderwear! What did the cloud say to the lightning bolt? You’re shocking!

Kindergarten Blog 11/12

The biggest event of the week was certainly getting to see our Fourth Grade Buddies again. Activities included Fourth Graders reading stories to the Kindergartners, playing a game of Sharks and Sailors, and Kindergartners teaching the hand motions to and singing This Land is Your Land.  We look forward to seeing the Buddies again soon. We continue to love singing each morning and are working on singing one of our favorites, This Pretty Planet, as a round. Here is a link to Tom Chapin singing it.  We listen to this frequently at snack time.  This Pretty Planet In preparation for...
