K Blog 2/18

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We had an exciting week of activities with other grades! On Thursday, the Kindergarteners had a fun buddy activity outside in the warmer weather.  On Friday, Kindergarteners and 2nd graders read newly completed stories to each other. In addition to the fun activities with other grades, this week we switched from having individually spaced desks to having two groups of desks pushed together to make big tables! The children have enjoyed doing group work and choice activities at these big tables together.

In Reading we talked about Sound Power and practiced sounding out some nonsense syllables. We practiced combining Picture Power and Sound Power to figure out unknown words.  We added we and said to our list of snap words and did some puzzles to review the many snap words that we have studied.

In Math we added times to our daily schedule and played the game I Have/Who Has with clocks.  We also continued playing addition games with dice to build number sense. Many children continued playing Dots and Boxes and using the Pattern Blocks in their free time.

In Social Studies children drew pictures of families that are different from their own.  They thought about the adults, the children, the skin color, and the hair color.  Next we will build the families out of Model Magic. We experimented with coloring the model magic to get the correct skin colors.

For Science this week, the Kindergarteners crafted a foolproof checklist to prove whether something is living or not, and then in groups tested it on different items and creatures we could think of to test the checklist’s reliability. We also learned new verses to “Are You Living?”

In Hebrew, we learned a new version of one of our favorite games called Mi Yesh/Li Yesh (Who Has/I Have), in which we deal out a deck of cards all numbered 1-5, all colored in with one color. In Hebrew, the children have to ask who has the match to their cards to complete all the matches. We also learned more of “Ani Ohev Shokolad”.

We concluded with Kabbalat Shabbat.

We wish you a peaceful, happy, healthy February Break and look forward to continuing to work with your children when we return.

Shabbat Shalom,

Atalya and Dawn
