First Grade News

Dear Families,

In science, students have been studying different types of clouds. We made flip up posters to show what we learned about cumulous, cirrus, stratus, and cumulonimbus clouds. Check out pictures of them below! Students also learned a song about the cloud types. We are including the lyrics, ask your student to sing with you at home!

Our word detectives have solved the case of the “long e” and investigated the vowel teams “ee” and “ea”. First graders have explored vowel teams through word hunts (in books, around the room, and tiny words), mixed up sentences, and creating new words from beginning sounds and blends and ending parts such as “een”. After the break, we will solve the case of the letter twins!

In reading, we have practiced how to chat about nonfiction books.  We are focusing on stopping after reading a page, thinking about what happened on the page, and also thinking about what happened before and after. Then we share what happened in our own words. Readers are sharing details or making connections from the pictures that the author did not mention in the words. We are becoming aware of our inferences!  Please practice this at home!

Shabbat Shalom,

Liz, Talia, and Ilana
