Between Shavuot and Memorial Day

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
Only three weeks left in the school year! June 15th is coming ever closer, but there’s still lots of learning and excitement going on at Hannah Senesh. This week, the fourth grade enjoyed one of the year’s highlights: our class trip to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Students learned a lot about immigration, life in NYC a century ago, and the idea of wanting versus needing something. We ate delicious pickles from The Pickle Guys, enjoyed a class-wide foot race in the park, and looked for evidence of old shops and Jewish life on the Lower East Side.
We are now working hard on rehearsals for our end of the year performance, Songs of the United States and Israel. We hope you will join us on June 7th at 9:00 am as we celebrate all that our students have accomplished in fourth grade!

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
After an exciting game of Jewish Jeopardy (Ancient Israel edition), we have begun finishing up the last unit on our curriculum: the end of Parshat VaYeitzei in Chumash. Fourth graders read about the birth of the twelve tribes and about Lavan’s plot to trick Yaacov into staying with him as a shepherd forever. We are looking forward to finishing our Parshah next week and completing our final Judaic Studies projects, which will be on display during the end of the year performance on June 7th. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Alisa:

This was an exciting week for fourth grade!

To coincide with our study of immigration, we visited the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There, we were greeted by a tour guide who lead us through an activity and a tour of two tenements. Students engaged in a conversation and informal debate about needs verses wants. After defining needs and wants, students considered a few different items, moving to different parts of the room depending on whether they believed it to be a need or want. An interesting debate occurred when considering internet access. Students had convincing arguments for both sides. We traveled back in time to the 1880s and then the 1920s. Students experienced first-hand what it felt like to live in a tenement housing as an immigrant. It was an incredible field trip! If you want to learn more about tours at the Tenement Museum click here.
In Writing, we celebrated our information writing with a TED Talk themed publishing celebration. Students braved the stage and practiced their public speaking skills as they taught the class about their topic.

Have a great Memorial Day!
