HUMANITIES

It was so nice talking with most of you this week at parent-teacher conferences, and I look forward to speaking with the rest of you next week.

In History class, students took a final test on ancient Egypt. Studying for this test was an important learning experience, as students tried out and shared different study strategies and figured out which worked best for them. As part of our preparation for the test, we played a competitive and enthusiastic game of Jeopardy. The students should feel proud of themselves for all that they’ve learned about ancient Egypt this semester!

In Literature, we continued reading our “Coming of Age” novels: The Wednesday Wars and Goodbye Stranger. To complement our reading, we analyzed a poem about growing up: “On Turning Ten,” by Billy Collins. The poem sparked discussions about the magic and imagination that accompanies childhood, and the fears and responsibilities that come with entering our teenage years. We asked ourselves: Why do we have these fears? How can we address them? What is exciting about being a teenager? I look forward to continuing conversations like these as we progress through our Coming of Age unit.

Have a great weekend,

Naomi

SCIENCE

Students this week were assigned their disease for the project. They conducted in depth research in order to become experts on their disease. This will prepare them for when we start designing and building their informative disease games next week. Students are filled with questions and curious as they discover details about their assigned disease. We cannot wait for next week when they start designing their games.

JUDAICS

“This week in class we started our Artist explanation for our project about the Burning Bush. Last week we looked at different interpretations from artists about this scene where Moshe first encounters G-d (Shemot 3 1-5). In class this week we started planning for our own art about this important moment in Torah. We have the choice of making our art with clay or painting. We are planning our art by looking closely at the text and asking kushiyot and close observations. We will be making the art based on specific words in the text and on what we believe the scene looked like and represented. I think it will take a long time but in the end will be worth it. Learning through art helps us be more creative with our opinions. It helps us visualize the text and think about symbolism.” – Isaac

HEBREW

Dear parents,

This week, the students practiced writing a flowing paragraph in Hebrew.

HaKbatza Aleph wrote a paragraph in the future tense about what they will do when they reach their special place one day. Next, the students learned an Israeli song about a boy who wanted a dog but got a cat and started discussing the place of pets in our lives.

HaKbatza Bet wrote a mini real or fictional biography about an interesting character. Next, we read a conversation about a girl who painted her room in many colors and we discussed furniture words that are exception nouns.

I wish everyone a nice weekend,

Andreea
