Weeks 34 and 35: Monday, May 13th – Friday, May 24th.

Jewish Museum Field Trip

Every year, 8th graders at Hannah Senesh collaborate with educators from the Jewish Museum to create an art project. In order to get inspiration for their art project, we traveled to the museum and looked at different pieces in its’ collection. This year, students are working on creating a memorial for something that is important to them or that they want to remember.

After looking at a few pieces, students bought lunch at Russ & Daughters and played in Central Park.  Next week, students will finish their memorials with help from an art educator who will come to Senesh to work with us.

Math

There are only a few weeks left until graduation so the 8th grade is doing lots of Algebra I review in order to be prepared for high school math. For our students taking the Algebra I regents, we’ve been doing a comprehensive regents review and we’re even having a mock regents during the last week of school! For our students not taking the regents, we’re reviewing just as much material as most of our students will be heading into Geometry next year. Hang in there, 8th grade; summer is right around the corner!

Science

Students have finished their background research and knowledge about bridges. They have been grouped together in order to design and build their own bridges. This week students made blueprints of their bridges. Then they used a bridge design software to make sure these bridges had the proper structure in order to be functional. Students had to build their bridges on this simulation software in order to get a truck to drive across the bridge. Next in science we will start building our bridges from craft sticks and discovery if the bridges can support a fix load.

Williamsburg Field Trip

Today, students traveled to South Williamsburg to learn about the Satmar community. We enjoyed buying and eating rugelach and babka from bakeries, and tried to notice and observe as much as we could as we walked around. 8th grade boys had an opportunity to talk with someone from the community, and to peek into a synagogue and a Beit Midrash (thank you David Samuels!). 8th grade girls visited a hat shop, an amazing toy store, and a tzedaka that prepares food for home-bound elderly and hospitals. Ask your 8th grader for more info!
