Week 14: Monday, December 4th – Friday, December 8th

Advisory:

Dear parents,

This week in advisory we did a short meditation about dealing with anger. Next, the students will put on short skits about social situations in middle school.

Hebrew:

Dear parents,

This week  HaKbatza Aleph learned the structure KEDAY and LO KEDAY- it’s a good idea, it’s not a good idea/ it’s worth it, it’s not worth it. the students read various texts on this topic and used verbally and in writing.

HaKbatza Bet finished the unit on trips and places in Israel and continued to practice Compound Nouns.

Shabbat Shalom,

Andreea

Heritage:

Humanities:

Literature and Writing: This week, students completed the first draft of their Columbus argument essays, took their Crucible Test, completed their second vocabulary unit of the year, and had time to work on their independent reading project.  What a busy week!  Next week, we will edit and revise the first draft of our papers, take our second vocabulary quiz, and start work on our final project related to the Crucible.  Students will have to create a multimedia project that examines a more recent example of a witchhunt and also connects that witch hun to the to the events in the play.

History: This week, students learned about the Enlightenment and the views of 5 philosophers from the era that influenced the writers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Then, students role-played as Loyalists, Patriots, and Neutralists in colonial town hall meetings, arguing their positions on how the colonists should react to the the Proclamation of 1763, The Stamp Act, The Quartering Act, Townshend Acts and the Boston Massacre.  Next week, we will continue to simulate colonial town hall meetings as we learn about the Boston Tea Party, The Intolerable Acts, the First Continental Congress and the Battle of Lexington and Concord.  Then, we will start our study of the Declaration of Independence.

Hope everyone has a great weekend,

Michael

Judaic Studies:

8th graders are studying a significant section of Talmud! We completed our first sugiya (discussion) this week, and discovered many surprising things about Hanukka. Did you know that the mitzvah of Chanuka is to light just one candle each of the 8 nights? Or that Hanukka might be a “redo” for Sukkot? Ask your 8th grader to explain!

Shabbat shalom,

Jessica

Math:

This week the 8Y class had a test on Unit 4 and then moved on to Unit 5. They started Simplifying Algebraic Fractions and will work with multiplying and Dividing Algebraic Fractions. They will work through this Unit and have a test before the break. The 8X class is finishing up Unit 4 and will have a test on Thursday. They will have all of next week to work in groups on a packet that helps them review Unit 4.

Its been a good week, hope everyone enjoys the weekend,

Craig

Science:

This week in science we started our new unit discovering the chemistry involved within cooking. We used a virtual kitchen in order to give students the chance to create different dishes. They were required to select the needed ingredients then chop, slice, boil, bake in order to transform them into edible dishes. We cannot wait to continue next week exploring this concept of Cooking Chemistry.
