October 21, 2022 — The End of Fall Jewish Holidays

Hebrew with Rimma

For the past two short weeks students worked hard on their oral and writing skills.

Students learned how to summarize a long story based on the vocabulary that they learned and they finished their creative posters.

We continue to explore the unit about food. We just started to learn how to express opinions using complete sentences.

We brainstormed  about how to write a review to the restaurant and made a list of the restaurant qualities that we liked or disliked. Our next step will be an advertising project.

Dear 4th Grade Families,

What an exciting two weeks we have had. The tradition of a 4th Grade Sukkah Sleepover has returned, and we have fun photos to share with you. You can find them on this album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/z2dfZiZVEh4vWfe6A We then got to celebrate Simchat Torah with our kindergarten buddies, dancing around the Torah along with the rest of the school. We had a blast!

In Social Studies, we have been exploring the Jamestown and Plimoth colonies. We looked at what the journeys were like, who was included in the exploration, what occupations people had, and more. As well, we delved into the topic of how Europeans affected and impacted Native Nations (specifically the Powhatan Nation in Virginia and the Wampanoag Nation in Massachusetts). We had conversations about “otherness” and who creates/writes history.

In Writing, we are crafting our [realistic] fiction stories. We have been working hard on our first draft, and are slowly adding revision techniques to help us create more engaging work. This week, we did a lesson on why punctuation marks are important, and how they help a reader to better understand a story. We also started our work on expanding our story. First, we re-read what we had written. Next, we found [at least] one place where we think we could stretch out that moment and describe it in a way that paints a picture for the audience. Then, we verbally rehearsed what we wanted to write with our table-mates, and asked them for help when we felt stuck with how to describe a moment. Finally, we used flair pens to put these revisions onto our story. Students came up to me, kvelling about how they turned three words into a whole paragraph (for instance)! The dedication many of the 4th Graders have in improving their story is awe-inspiring!

Shabbat shalom,

Hilary

STEAM with Sammi

In science, we have continued our scientific community lessons and have focused in on how to make decisions as a group. After everyone plans, the first thing students should do is present their ideas to the group. If possible for the challenge, they can also build small prototypes of their design. Then, as a group, they can compromise, choose 1 idea they all like, take a vote, spin a wheel to choose someone to be leader, do rock-paper-scissors, decide an order to try ideas, etc. There are so many ways to make a decision and compromise! With that said, it is very challenging. As expected, there have been some arguments in groups and we pause to work through them together. Such a challenging but important life skill! Check out the pictures to see some awesome designs the students have built during these challenges.

Music with Heidi

In Music class, our Fourth Graders have been reviewing the major, minor and pentatonic scales. They have learned about the differences between xylophones, glockenspiels, marimbas and vibraphones, as well as differences between rhythm sticks and various mallets. Plus, this week many of them got a chance to play a xylophone using two mallets!
