Kindergarten General Studies

Hello Kindergarten Families!

We have had a wonderful three days getting reacquainted with each other and with our routines. The new groups are working out well and children are having the opportunity to get to know each other a bit better. Today Karen Brody, the Lower School Psychologist, came and did a puppet show on being a kind and helpful friend, which is important Kindergarten learning and something we will continue to talk about.

In Literacy we have been rotating through stations focusing on reading, phonics, and handwriting. We read two books by Kevin Henkes, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse and Lilly’s Big Day. Lilly is a very appealing mouse who sometimes has trouble waiting, listening, or having reasonable expectations. In other words, a character we all can relate to! She adores her kindhearted teacher who is a really understanding problem solver.

For Math we made a graph that shows the different activities that children did over the break. “Watched a Movie” and “Played Outside” came in first and second, and many children also “Visited Family” and “Stayed Up Late.” Sounds like a pretty perfect break to me!

Over the last couple of school weeks, Kindergarteners have been successfully eating a community lunch in the classrooms. This allows for a more intimate experience, fewer distractions, and kids eating more of their lunch. We have chosen two 4th graders a week to eat with the class and act as helpers and big buddies. They love it!

As we settle into the new year we wanted to remind parents how important it is for children to be on time (8:15). That is when we go over the plans for the day and begin the important learning of Kindergarten. We hate for anyone to miss any of that.

As always, do not hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Dawn, Talia, and Liz
