Math with Justin

Fourth Graders finished the year learning about customary and metric measurement. Our students learned the different units for measuring weight, length, volume, and temperature. We also learned about some of the different prefixes from the metric system (micro-, milli-, centi-, kilo-, mega-, etc) and how they are used with different base units. We also finished up the year reviewing important concepts from earlier in the year such as multiplying fractions, multi-digit multiplication and division, and strategies for solving word problems. It’s been a wonderful year for our fourth grade mathematicians. I’m very proud of their growth and work. Have a great summer; we will miss you!

Hebrew with Rimma

Judaic Studies with Phyllis

For the past few weeks we have taken a deep dive into the question “Did Yitzchak (Isaac) suspect that he was blessing Yaakov (Jacob) and not Esav (Esau)?”  The students found clues in the text to support their opinions in a short paragraph essay.  We then plotted our opinions on a continuum (one one end – “Yitzchak knew he was blessing Yaakov” and on the other end “Yitzchak thought he was blessing Esav”).  We learned that the Torah can be interpreted in many ways, and that an opinion is considered valid as long as it can be supported by text.  After students shared their opinions, students had the opportunity to change the placement of their “opinion card” on the continuum – as true Elu V’Elu is being open to changing your opinion based on listening to others.  Finally we examined different artists’ depictions of Isaac’s blessing of Jacob as examples of art midrash and created our own art and written midrashim.  A midrash is a story or art work that answers kushiyot (text-based questins) and fills details that are missing from the text.

We ended the week with a competitive game of “Around the World.”  The kids were confused when I said I would play a trivia game because their chromebooks were collected on Tuesday – how can there be triva without Kahoot!? But they quickly caught on to the non-technology based triva game and had a great time trying to get “Around the World” or the classroom by answering trivia from the year.

It has been a wonderful experience teaching your children!  I have loved praying, learning Torah, exploring Jewish history and celebrating the holidays with them.  Thank you for sharing them with me and the whole fourth grade team.

Humanities with Hilary

Dear 4th Grade families,

Can you believe this two year tenure is complete? I am in a state of denial that these kids will not continue to be mine for a third year.

No matter what — these kids are READY (really, beyond ready) for 5th Grade! They have grown so much these two years, as writers, as historians, as mathematicians, and as human beings. This group is ready to go out into the world; to ask the deep questions, to explore new material, to write powerfully persuasive letters or speeches. I cannot wait to see what is next for every single one of them!

This last week was filled with both reflection/review AND fun!

After learning that the quarter was going to add pictures of Maya Angelou and Sally Ride, students created their own quarter design! They based it off of their final project,so some are quarters of people while others are of events. Students also had the opportunity to look through a portfolio of their work from Fall 2019 to today …. WOAH!

We had our FINAL reward of a “Beach Day” 😎 Students dressed up in their best “fun in the sun” gear. In the afternoon, 4th Graders played various games using water balloons, sprinklers, and sponges. Let’s just say that we got a little wet.

Finally, we said goodbye to a few more of our friends who are leaving the Senesh Community. Rimma led the grade in a wonderful activity of writing notes to each departing student, and then creating a beautiful book. The classes took quizzes on “How Well Do You Know _____,” laughing the entire time. We also gave toasts to each student, saying what we will miss about them.

For the summer –> Sarah, the 5th Grade Humanities teacher sent an email about the summer reading assignment AND many recommendations of books. Please make sure to read it! I have also posted it on my google classroom page.

Thank you, everyone, for sharing your special student with us. They have helped make this crazy year a lot more sane and filled with a lot more fun. Have a wonderful summer!

Science with Sammi

Dear 4th-grade families,
What a year it has been! I am so proud of the 4th graders for all they have done in science this year. What we couldn’t do hands-on, we made up for in knowledge.
To summarize, here is what your 4th graders learned this year:
– How to use Google Classroom
– How to use their Chromebooks
– Typing Skills
– How to send and respond properly to an email
– How to use Google Slides
– The Scientific Method (with lots of experiments for practice)
– Viruses, the immune system, and vaccines
– Plant and animal adaptations
It has been an honor teaching them for a second year and I’m so lucky to have them for one more year as 5th graders.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and I’ll see you in the fall!

Music with Heidi

Fourth Graders finished up the year by reviewing their presentation and moving and listening to songs they love. Wishing students all the best in Middle School!
