First Grade News

Dear Families,

In writing, we have been focusing on elaboration or adding more to our stories. We are starting to use paper with more lines, taping on extra lines to revise, and using question words to add on to our sentences. We are also practicing telling our stories to our writing partner so we can add more details to our books. We tell our story while our partner makes a movie in their head, then they ask questions, after we retell our story with new details, and finally we add the details to our stories.

In Hebrew, we learned the letters nun, nun sofit (final nun) and dalet as well as a new vowel, which makes the “eh” sound and kept practicing our reading and writing with all the letters and vowels that we have learned so far. We also learned the verb Kanah (buy, masculine) and kantah (buy, feminine) and we practiced using those verbs in writing and speaking. The first graders were so excited to write their first sentences in Hebrew. We added lots of new words to our word wall like: nachash(snake), naalayim (shoes), ner (candle), namer (tiger), devora (bee), delet (door) and dag (fish).

In Tefilah, we learned the first section of the amidah which is about giborim. We spoke about the meaning of the word gibor (hero) and the people in our lives that are giborim (heroes). We all agreed that our family members are our heroes!

This week Parasha is Toldot, which is about Jacob receiving Isaac’s blessing. We talked about how these two brothers were very different from each other, but that they also had a few similarities. We had the opportunity to interview someone in our class and learn about our similarities and differences.

Shabbat Shalom,

Liz, Ilana, Talia, and Noa
