Week 23: Monday, February 12 – Friday, February 16

Advisory

This week we led an activity in which we started having a conversation about ways to have debates/ arguments in effective and nonviolent ways. The students discussed what are the things that set them off in conversations and what steps we can they take in order to be able to listen to each other and express their opinions without hurting each other’s feelings.

Dear parents,

This week the students took various assessments in the Past tense, practicing how to use various verbs in order to interview a friend about a special day they had with their family. In addition, we started preparing for the Israel trip by learning a few Israeli songs by Shlomo Artzi and Kaveret.

I wish everyone a relaxing vacation,

Andreea

Humanities

Literature and Writing: This week, students completed a Socratic seminar discussion on Othello.  Then students continued work on their parody of a scene from Othello.  The modern translations of their scene and parody scripts were completed.  When we come back from break, they will give presentations of their parody graphic novel or perform their parodic scene.

History: This week, students simulated the constitutional convention of 1789.  Students were assigned a real delegate from the convention to play and for four days, debated the merits and ways they could all form a more perfect union.  When we return from break, we will look at the selling of the Constitution to the rest of the country and how the Bill of Rights were created.

I hope everyone has a restful February break,

Michael

Judaic Studies

We followed the story of Devorah in the book of Shoftim to its bloody end. Students enjoyed the layered word play in this text, and the creepy depiction of Yael as a maternal figure (who then murders the man she has taken care of so tenderly). Students were asked to depict a moment that revealed character for each of the 4 main figures in this story. Shabbat shalom and hofesh tov!

Math

It has been a long month in a half since our last break, but the 8th grade has done a lot in that time frame. They have worked on the play and getting ready for Israel. In the meantime we have done some math work. They have worked on Transformations with a graph and finding angles in different shapes. They will finally be done with the 8A textbook and will be moving on to the 8B textbook. The first unit they will work on is graphs of Linear functions and quadratic functions. It should be a  fun unit and move on from there.

I hope everyone has a wonderful break! See you in 2 weeks!

Science

This week in science we finished up our cooking chemistry unit. The students used all the skills and knowledge gained during this unit, in order to complete their final activity. They were giving all the core ingredients from previous activities and were required to come up with a unique dish. Students enjoyed the challenge and were taking risks in what they prepared. We might have started a spark of the culinary science interest. I would be proud of any of our students take up this interest professional. After break we will continue our magical process of discovering science focusing on introduction physics.
